Quinta do Lago Joins GOLF.com’s Top 100 Golf Resorts in the World
Quinta do Lago has added another major accolade to an already impressive collection after making its debut in GOLF.com’s Top 100 Resorts in the World for 2026.
The latest list brings together leading golf resorts from around the globe, looking beyond the quality of the courses alone to consider accommodation, hospitality and the wider experience available once the clubs have been put away.
It is worth noting that GOLF.com’s Top 100 is organised by geographical region and alphabetically rather than ranking the resorts from first to 100th. Quinta do Lago appears as a new entry in the Continental Europe section alongside destinations including Monte Rei, Finca Cortesin, Costa Navarino, Sotogrande and Verdura.
For us at Hashtag Golf Travel, its inclusion makes complete sense.
Quinta do Lago has three genuinely different championship golf courses, excellent practice and coaching facilities and one of the broadest non-golf offerings of any resort in the Algarve. It is somewhere you can comfortably build an entire week around without simply repeating the same experience every day.
Why Quinta do Lago belongs on a world Top 100 list
A great golf resort needs to offer more than a great golf course.
That sounds obvious, but there are plenty of destinations where golfers play a fantastic round and then immediately start looking elsewhere for dinner, entertainment or something for the non-golfers in the group to do.
Quinta do Lago is different.
Golf remains at the heart of the resort, but it sits alongside restaurants, beaches, sports facilities, wellness, cycling, tennis, padel and a huge choice of accommodation.
The resort is also only around 15 minutes from Faro Airport, so golfers flying from the UK can go from baggage reclaim to the resort remarkably quickly. It sits beside approximately 2,000 acres of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, which gives it a much more natural setting than you might expect from one of the Algarve's biggest luxury destinations.
That combination is a big part of why we regularly recommend Quinta do Lago.
You can make it a serious golf trip.
You can make it a family holiday.
Or you can very easily do both.
Three courses and three very different rounds
One of Quinta do Lago's biggest strengths is that you do not need to leave the resort to experience variety.
There are three 18-hole championship courses: South, North and Laranjal.
If we were organising a first visit, we would absolutely recommend playing all three.
The South Course
The South Course is the best known of the trio.
Designed by William Mitchell and opened in 1974, the par-72 course has hosted the Portuguese Open eight times. Its fairways move between umbrella pines, lakes and wildflowers alongside the Ria Formosa, with a mixture of doglegs and strategically positioned hazards placing a premium on accurate driving.
For us, this is the headline round.
It has the tournament history, the scenery and the sense of occasion many golfers are looking for when they book a premium Algarve golf holiday.
But it is not simply a course for low handicappers.
Choose the appropriate tees and there is enough room to enjoy the experience without spending the whole day feeling beaten up by a championship layout. Move farther back and the same holes become considerably more demanding.
That is good resort golf.
The North Course
The North Course offers a different type of challenge.
It underwent a €9 million redesign in 2014 led by Beau Welling in collaboration with former European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley. Greens, tees, bunkers, drainage and irrigation were rebuilt, while four sets of tees were introduced on every hole.
We like the North because it asks plenty of questions without relying solely on length.
Undulating greens, well-positioned bunkers and water hazards reward good positioning, while closely mown areas around the greens give golfers several different recovery options.
It is the sort of course where the score can change quite quickly if your short game goes missing.
Anyone claiming otherwise after the round is welcome to blame the Algarve breeze.
Laranjal
Then there is Laranjal, and for plenty of regular visitors this is the favourite.
Built on a former orange grove around two kilometres east of the main resort, Laranjal opened in 2009 and stretches to 6,480 metres.
Its identity comes from rolling terrain, five lakes, umbrella pines, cork oaks and the orange trees that remain connected to the site's history. The layout unusually contains five par threes, five par fives and eight par fours.
For us, Laranjal is an important part of the Quinta do Lago experience because it stops a three-round stay feeling repetitive.
South has the championship history.
North brings a modern strategic test.
Laranjal feels slightly more removed from the wider resort and has its own character.
If you have travelled all the way to Quinta do Lago, play all three.
Serious facilities for golfers who actually want to improve
There is also much more available than three tee times.
The Paul McGinley Golf Academy was founded in 2011, while the resort's TaylorMade Performance Centre offers club fitting and performance analysis using modern technology. Practice facilities include a driving range, putting areas and a dedicated short-game facility.
That makes Quinta do Lago particularly useful for tuition breaks.
A golfer can have a coaching session in the morning, work on a particular part of the game and then take it onto one of three championship courses rather than spending the entire trip hitting balls on a range.
Even if you are not booking formal tuition, we'd still build some practice time into the itinerary.
There is little point travelling to play three excellent courses and discovering on the first tee that the golf swing apparently missed the flight.
The recognition goes beyond one new list
The GOLF.com inclusion is the newest international acknowledgement, but it is not an isolated one.
Quinta do Lago was named Europe's Best Golf Venue at the World Golf Awards in 2023, 2024 and 2025, while its South Course won Europe's Best Golf Course in both 2022 and 2023. The resort is again among the nominees for Europe's Best Golf Venue in 2026.
That consistency is probably more meaningful than any single award.
Golf-resort rankings will always involve an element of personal judgement. One golfer might prioritise architecture, another wants the best hotel, while somebody else judges an entire trip largely on the quality of the 19th hole.
But when the same destination continues appearing in respected international lists, it tells you something about the overall standard being maintained.
The reason we'd recommend it to non-golfers too
This might actually be where Quinta do Lago separates itself most clearly from many golf resorts.
The Campus is a high-performance sports and wellness facility with a gym, swimming pool, tennis and padel courts, cycling, group fitness, personal training and recovery facilities.
It is serious enough to be used by professional athletes and sports teams, but ordinary guests do not need to possess professional-level fitness to use it.
The tennis and padel offering alone includes acrylic and clay tennis courts plus indoor and outdoor padel facilities.
For mixed groups, that's a big advantage.
One person can play the South Course.
Another can book padel or a fitness session.
Somebody else can head towards the beach.
Everyone can meet again for dinner without the non-golfers having spent five hours wondering why they agreed to come on a golf holiday.
Fourteen places to eat and drink
Dining is another area where the scale of Quinta do Lago becomes apparent.
The resort currently lists 14 restaurants and bars, ranging from relaxed clubhouse and family dining to seafood beside the water and more formal evenings.
You might have lunch at the golf clubhouse after a round, head to GiGi's beside the beach for seafood, choose Bovino Steakhouse for dinner or spend time around The Campus without needing to return to the hotel every time you want something to eat.
The variety matters more on longer trips.
Eating in the same restaurant every night for a week can make even a very good resort begin to feel repetitive. Quinta do Lago is large enough that guests can create completely different evenings without travelling far.
Where should you stay at Quinta do Lago?
Accommodation is equally varied.
There are luxury villas, apartments and townhouses available through the resort, as well as hotel options including The Magnolia Hotel and nearby Conrad Algarve.
The Magnolia offers a more relaxed, colourful boutique experience with 74 rooms and seven cottages, a heated pool, gym and wellness facilities.
For golf groups, we also really like the villa and apartment option.
Four or eight golfers travelling together can have individual bedrooms while still sharing a lounge, kitchen and outside space. It turns the accommodation into part of the social side of the trip rather than everyone disappearing into separate hotel rooms immediately after dinner.
Couples may prefer the convenience of a hotel.
Families may want a larger villa.
That flexibility is another reason Quinta do Lago works for so many different types of holiday.
Don't spend the whole week on the golf course
As good as the golf is, we would always leave some room in the itinerary for the surrounding Algarve.
Quinta do Lago sits beside the Ria Formosa, a protected landscape of lagoons, marshland and barrier islands that is particularly important for birdlife.
There are walking and cycling opportunities around the area, while the coast provides an obvious alternative when somebody needs a break from golf.
And with Faro Airport only around 15 minutes away, the resort also works particularly well for shorter stays.
You don't lose the first and final days of a four-night trip sitting on a transfer coach.
That's worth remembering when comparing the Algarve with destinations that require an additional hour or two of travel after landing.
Who do we think Quinta do Lago suits best?
The obvious answer is golfers who want quality and choice.
Three championship courses mean you can play a different layout on three consecutive days without leaving the destination.
But we'd also recommend it particularly strongly for couples and mixed groups.
Some golf resorts are brilliant when everybody travelling is obsessed with golf.
Quinta do Lago is brilliant even when they aren't.
There is enough sport, food, wellness, beach time and wider lifestyle offering for the trip to work around everybody rather than expecting everybody else to work around the golfers.
Families also have plenty of choice, while groups looking for something more premium than a straightforward hotel-and-green-fee package will find plenty here to build into a longer itinerary.
Our verdict
Quinta do Lago making its debut in GOLF.com's Top 100 Resorts in the World feels less like a surprise and more like recognition catching up with what golfers who regularly visit the Algarve already know.
It isn't simply about having three good courses.
Plenty of destinations can offer good golf.
What Quinta do Lago does particularly well is connect the golf with everything around it.
You can play a Portuguese Open venue in the morning, work on your game at a high-level academy, spend the afternoon at the beach or The Campus and still have a completely different restaurant to try that evening.
Then wake up and play an entirely different championship course the following day.
That is what makes a golf resort, rather than simply a resort with golf attached.
For UK golfers planning a premium Algarve trip, Quinta do Lago remains one of the destinations we would be very comfortable recommending — and its first appearance in GOLF.com's world Top 100 only strengthens that case.
