Real Club de Golf Sotogrande is one of Spain’s most historic and highly regarded golf courses, positioned close to the Mediterranean coast in Sotogrande, Andalucía. The championship course plays to a par of 72 and measures approximately 6,224 metres. The fairways can appear generous from the tee, but finding the correct side is essential. A well-positioned drive opens the best route towards the flag, while a wayward shot may leave trees, bunkers or water blocking the approach.

Elevated, strongly contoured greens are among Sotogrande’s defining features. Approach shots often need to carry fully onto the putting surface, and golfers who miss on the wrong side can face delicate recoveries from sand, slopes or tightly cut surrounds. The greens are known for playing quickly and smoothly, placing extra importance on pace control and leaving the ball below the hole.

Water becomes increasingly important as the round develops. The seventh combines a narrow green with water guarding its right side, while the stretches from holes 12 to 14 and 16 to 18 provide a demanding finish shaped by lakes and strategically positioned hazards. These closing holes reward patient course management and can quickly punish golfers who become too aggressive.

The course underwent a major restoration completed in 2016 by Roger Rulewich and David Fleury. The project recovered the original shapes and sizes of the greens, reconstructed tees and fairways, improved drainage and returned important design features closer to Robert Trent Jones Sr’s original vision.

Alongside the championship layout, the club has a nine-hole par-three course that is ideal for short-game practice, beginners or a quicker additional round. Practice facilities include a driving range, putting green and dedicated approach area, with golf lessons and clinics also available.

Golfers can hire clubs, buggies and trolleys, while caddie services are available for players who want local guidance. The clubhouse includes changing facilities, a professional shop and a restaurant where guests can enjoy food and drinks after their round.
