Quinta do Lago Golf
Quinta do Lago
Three distinct championship courses make Quinta do Lago one of the Algarve’s most versatile golf venues. The South, North and Laranjal layouts sit among pine forest, lakes and the protected landscape around the Ria Formosa, yet each asks different questions. With Faro Airport approximately 17km away by road and accommodation spread across the wider resort, golfers can build a varied itinerary without spending the week on long transfers.
The South Course is the established headline act. William Mitchell designed the original layout in 1974, using umbrella pines, lakes and wild flowers to frame a par-72 test of around 6,500 metres from the back tees. It has staged the Portuguese Open and rewards players who place the ball carefully rather than simply chasing distance. Water and the breeze can influence club selection, while views towards the Ria Formosa give the round a strong sense of place.
The North Course offers a different strategic challenge. Its major 2014 redesign involved Paul McGinley and introduced rebuilt greens, tees, bunkers and improved environmental systems. Low-cut areas around the putting surfaces create several recovery choices, so golfers who miss a green can use the ground or play a more lofted shot. Multiple tee positions help mixed-handicap groups find an appropriate test, while stronger players still need accurate approaches and sound course management.
Laranjal lies roughly 2km east of the main resort in the Ludo Valley. Opened in 2009 on the site of a former orange grove, the par-72 course measures about 6,480 metres and moves over gently rolling land between cork oaks, umbrella pines, orange trees and five lakes. Its five par fives, eight par fours and five par threes create a less conventional rhythm, and well-defined greens place a premium on distance control.
Practice and tuition are taken seriously. Quinta do Lago’s golf academy provides professional coaching, while the wider practice facilities and TaylorMade Performance Centre support golfers who want a lesson, fitting or structured warm-up. Buggies, trolleys, club hire and pro-shop services are available, although current arrangements should be confirmed for the travel dates.
After golf, the resort adds beaches, more than 14 dining experiences and The Campus sports hub. For a group that wants three contrasting rounds from one polished Algarve base, Quinta do Lago is difficult to beat. We can package the courses with the most suitable local accommodation and adjust the mix for ability, pace, preferred tee times and length of stay.
