Golf-course rankings usually focus on design, conditioning, history and championship pedigree. Golf World’s new Top 100 X Factor Courses list takes a slightly different approach, celebrating the places where the setting and sense of occasion can be every bit as memorable as the golf.

That makes La Hacienda Links Golf Resort a natural inclusion.

The Links course has been placed 67th in the inaugural global ranking, which brings together visually striking courses from six continents and 34 countries. La Hacienda was one of only two Spanish venues included, alongside nearby Real Club Valderrama.

Set above the Mediterranean in San Roque, the par-72 Links course offers elevated fairways, coastal holes and views stretching towards Gibraltar and North Africa. What makes a golf course beautiful?

Beauty is one of the most subjective things in golf.

Some golfers are drawn to towering dunes and wild Atlantic coastlines. Others prefer pine forests, mountain backdrops or perfectly presented parkland. A course does not necessarily need to be the hardest, oldest or most famous to create a lasting memory.

The best-looking courses tend to use their surroundings rather than simply sit within them. Their views influence how holes feel, how golfers choose shots and how the experience unfolds from the first tee to the final green.

That is where La Hacienda stands out. The Mediterranean, Gibraltar and the distant North African coastline are not occasional glimpses between holes. They form part of the course’s identity.

Golf World’s new ranking is not simply another attempt to decide which layouts are technically “best”. It celebrates courses with something distinctive—the kind of places that make golfers stop beside a tee, reach for their phone and momentarily forget that the group behind is waiting.

La Hacienda fits that description rather neatly.

A dramatic position on the Mediterranean

La Hacienda Links Golf Resort sits in the Cádiz municipality of San Roque, close to Sotogrande and the Strait of Gibraltar.

The Links course descends from higher ground towards the Mediterranean before following almost two kilometres of coastline. From its elevated sections, golfers can see the Rock of Gibraltar dominating the horizon, with the mountains of North Africa appearing beyond the water on clear days. The resort describes it as the only links-style course on the Costa del Sol.

There is something unusual about playing golf with two continents visible in the same panorama.

The scenery is particularly impressive because of the changes in elevation. Golfers begin above the coastline before moving down towards the sea, creating several elevated drives and approaches where the entire landscape seems to open up ahead.

Our view is that the course’s greatest strength is not any single photograph. It is the way the scenery continues to reappear during the round.

One hole may face Gibraltar, another may run alongside the Mediterranean, and the next might climb away from the water with the coastline behind the green. The direction and strength of the wind can change how those holes play, adding a genuine coastal element to the challenge.

The transformation of the Links course

Although golf has been played on the site for decades, the Links course experienced a major transformation before reopening in July 2022.

American architect Kurtis Bowman led a comprehensive redesign that rebuilt the tees, greens and bunkers while introducing new holes, wider playing areas and a much stronger visual connection to the sea. The project was intended to improve both the strategy of the course and the overall experience for visiting golfers.

Bowman’s work created wide fairways, large putting surfaces, bold bunkering and several interesting risk-and-reward decisions.

Wide fairways can look welcoming from the tee, but the best position is not always the most obvious one. Finding the correct section of the fairway may provide a clearer approach, while playing too safely can leave an awkward angle towards a large and carefully shaped green.

That balance is important on a holiday course. Golfers want to feel challenged, but very few travel to Spain hoping to spend five hours searching through thick rough.

La Hacienda provides enough space to keep the round moving while using wind, elevation, bunkers and green contours to separate thoughtful golf from simply hitting the ball as far as possible.

Course reviewers have particularly praised the coastal section, the elevated tee shots and the shared putting surface used by the fifth and 13th holes, one of the largest green complexes in Spain.

A course that is fun as well as photogenic

A spectacular location does not automatically create an enjoyable golf course.

There are beautiful venues where the scenery is far more memorable than the layout. La Hacienda’s redesign matters because it gave the course more than a lovely backdrop.

The broad landing areas encourage golfers to be confident from the tee, while changes in height create drives that seem to hang in the air against the Mediterranean. The approach shots then demand more care, particularly when the wind is moving across exposed greens.

Conditions can transform the course from one day to the next. A hole that feels manageable in calm weather can become a completely different test when the coastal breeze strengthens.

That unpredictability should appeal to UK golfers who enjoy traditional seaside golf but would prefer to play it beneath the Andalusian sun.

We would describe La Hacienda as a modern interpretation of links golf rather than a traditional British or Irish links. It does not try to recreate Scotland on the Costa del Sol. Instead, it takes ideas associated with coastal golf, wind, movement, strategic angles and open views, and gives them a distinctly Mediterranean character.

Two courses provide a more complete golf holiday

The Links may attract most of the headlines, but La Hacienda is a 36-hole golf resort.

Its second course, the Heathland, was designed by former Ryder Cup player Dave Thomas. The par-72 layout sits farther inland and moves through rolling terrain, natural valleys and more established vegetation. It offers a useful contrast to the exposed coastal character of the Links.

That contrast is important when planning a golf break.

Playing the same style of course throughout a holiday can become repetitive, even when the golf is excellent. At La Hacienda, golfers can experience the sea views and coastal wind of the Links before moving to a more sheltered inland layout.

The Links is the course we would prioritise for a first visit. It is the one that creates the strongest sense of place and the photographs everyone will take home.

However, the Heathland makes the resort much more practical for a longer stay. It provides a different test without requiring a lengthy transfer to another club.

The resort has also invested in its academy and practice facilities, helping turn La Hacienda into a complete golf destination rather than two standalone courses sharing the same address.

One of golf’s most impressive halfway stops

The views do not disappear when golfers pause after nine holes.

The resort’s Calma Bar sits between the outward and inward halves, looking over the Mediterranean, Gibraltar and the coast of North Africa. It combines the practical role of a halfway house with food, drinks and a setting that makes continuing the round slightly more difficult than usual.

The venue has received international recognition at the World Golf Awards and has become an important part of the wider La Hacienda experience.

A good halfway house, clubhouse terrace or post-round bar can help turn 18 holes into a full day. Calma Bar does exactly that. It gives golfers somewhere to sit, take in the view and recover before tackling the back nine.

Just remember that “one quick drink” and an acceptable pace of play do not always make comfortable playing partners.

Stay beside the golf at Fairmont La Hacienda Costa del Sol

La Hacienda’s transformation moved into another gear with the opening of Fairmont La Hacienda Costa del Sol in February 2025.

The five-star resort overlooks the Mediterranean and sits beside the two golf courses, creating the luxury stay-and-play experience the destination had previously been missing. Accor describes the development as containing 311 rooms, suites and private villas, including 47 villas with their own pools and terraces.

The accommodation uses light woods, natural textures and warm tones inspired by the surrounding Andalusian landscape. Rooms and suites have private terraces, while the larger villa options provide additional space, kitchens and private pools for families and golf groups.

For golfers, the hotel’s greatest advantage is the connection to the courses.

There is no need to build the day around a long transfer. Guests can have breakfast, prepare their clubs and move easily into the golf environment, with preferential course access available through the resort.

That convenience makes La Hacienda suitable for shorter trips as well as week-long holidays. A group can play both courses, enjoy a second round on the Links and still have time to visit other leading venues around Sotogrande.

A genuine luxury resort away from the fairways

The Fairmont gives non-golfers plenty of reasons to choose La Hacienda too.

Its 1,800-square-metre spa includes hydrotherapy facilities, a hammam, treatment spaces and dedicated yoga and fitness areas. Panoramic views extend from the Mediterranean towards the surrounding hills, giving the wellness facilities the same connection to the landscape found on the course.

There are also five dining venues, including a signature restaurant overseen by two-Michelin-starred chef Benito Gómez, more relaxed Mediterranean choices and a private beach club.

Families are catered for through separate children’s and teenagers’ clubs, while the larger villas give mixed groups space to stay together without everyone being confined to standard hotel rooms.

This broader offering matters.

La Hacienda is not simply somewhere a group of golfers can sleep between tee times. Couples, families and mixed-interest parties can enjoy the resort even when only some guests are playing.

One person can head to the Links while another uses the spa or beach facilities, with everyone meeting again for dinner overlooking the Mediterranean. That flexibility is often what turns a golf trip into a holiday the whole group genuinely enjoys.

Build a wider Sotogrande golf itinerary

La Hacienda also benefits from its position within one of Europe’s strongest golf regions.

San Roque and nearby Sotogrande are home to several of Spain’s best-known courses. Real Club Valderrama, La Reserva Club, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande and San Roque Club are all within the wider area.

This means golfers are not restricted to the resort’s two courses. La Hacienda can anchor a premium multi-course itinerary combining different designers, landscapes and playing styles.

Our ideal trip would include at least two rounds at La Hacienda, one on each course, followed by one or two of the established championship venues around Sotogrande.

The Links should not be treated merely as the scenic round added between more famous names. Following its redesign, it has developed a distinct identity and deserves to be one of the headline courses in the itinerary.

Is the Links course worth travelling for?

Yes, but not solely because a new ranking has called it beautiful.

Rankings are useful for introducing golfers to places they may not know, but they cannot tell the full story of a course. A high position does not guarantee that every golfer will enjoy the design, just as a lower position does not make a course less worthy of playing.

What matters at La Hacienda is that the scenery supports a genuinely enjoyable golf experience.

The coastal setting creates drama. The wind changes the challenge. The redesign provides strategy without making the course unnecessarily punishing. The Heathland offers variety, while the Fairmont hotel completes the resort experience.

The result is a destination capable of appealing to serious golfers, couples, luxury groups and travellers who care just as much about the hotel, food and setting as the final score.

Our verdict

The Links course at La Hacienda does not need a ranking to prove that it is beautiful. One look from its elevated fairways towards Gibraltar makes the case rather convincingly.

However, its inclusion in Golf World’s new global list is another sign of how far the resort has progressed since the 2022 redesign.

What was once primarily known as a scenic course near Sotogrande has developed into one of southern Spain’s most complete golf destinations. The renovation of the Links, improvements to the Heathland and practice facilities, the opening of Calma Bar and the arrival of Fairmont La Hacienda Costa del Sol have all helped raise the standard of the overall experience.
