Sotogrande
La Reserva Club is a modern championship golf course set in the hills above Sotogrande in southern Spain. The elevated position provides views across the Mediterranean, the surrounding Andalusian countryside and, on clear days, towards Gibraltar. Wide fairways move through rolling ground dotted with cork trees, while bright white bunkers and several water hazards give the course a polished resort feel.
Designed by American golf architect Cabell B. Robinson, La Reserva opened in 2003. The 18-hole course plays to a par of 72 and measures 6,721 metres from its longest tees. Several shorter teeing options make the layout accessible to a broad range of golfers, although its length, large greens and strategically positioned hazards provide a serious challenge from the back markers.
Generous fairways make La Reserva enjoyable from the tee, but golfers still need to think carefully about position. The best angle into each green is often found from one particular side of the fairway, while an inaccurate drive can leave a long approach over sand or water. Gentle changes in elevation also create uphill, downhill and uneven lies throughout the round.
The greens are large and offer numerous flag positions, placing extra importance on distance control. Reaching the correct section of the putting surface can create a realistic birdie opportunity, but finishing on the wrong tier may leave a difficult long putt. Deep bunkers and closely cut surrounds add further pressure to approach shots and short-game recoveries.
The par-three fifth is one of the course’s most memorable holes, with a significant water hazard demanding an accurate tee shot. Later in the round, the par-five 16th presents a classic risk-and-reward decision. Longer hitters may consider attacking the green in two, but water and bunkering can quickly punish an ambitious shot that is not properly struck.
La Reserva has hosted major professional tournaments, including the Aramco Team Series. Its combination of tournament length, spectator-friendly ground and high-quality conditioning has helped the course build a strong reputation alongside Sotogrande’s more established names, including Real Club Valderrama and Real Club de Golf Sotogrande.
Practice facilities include a driving range, putting green and short-game area. The on-site golf academy provides lessons and clinics for different ages and abilities, while caddie services are available for golfers seeking local course knowledge. The club also has a professional shop stocking golf equipment and clothing.
Away from the course, La Reserva Club offers restaurants, tennis and padel facilities, wellness activities and a private beach club built around a man-made lagoon. These additional facilities make it particularly appealing for couples, families and mixed groups where not everyone plans to play golf every day.

About The Area
San Roque is one of Spain’s finest golf holiday destinations, offering an exceptional collection of championship courses beside Sotogrande and the Strait of Gibraltar. The area combines polished resorts and prestigious golf clubs with beaches, traditional Andalusian streets and relaxed evenings around the marina. Gibraltar Airport is roughly 15 minutes away, while Málaga and Jerez airports can usually be reached in around an hour by car.
The headline venue is The San Roque Club Old Course, created by Dave Thomas and opened in 1990. Its rolling fairways, mature cork-oak surroundings and tight playing corridors demand accurate driving and careful approach shots. The course has hosted the Spanish Open and numerous European Tour Qualifying School events, giving golfers a genuine championship experience.
Closer to the coast, La Hacienda Links Golf Resort has two contrasting 18-hole layouts. The Links Course follows the Mediterranean shoreline, with views towards Gibraltar and, on clear days, North Africa. The Heathland Course moves inland across more undulating ground, where streams, lakes and changing elevations provide a different challenge.
San Roque also places golfers close to Real Club Sotogrande, La Reserva, La Cañada and Real Club Valderrama. This remarkable concentration of courses makes it easy to build a varied itinerary without spending hours travelling between rounds.
Away from golf, we recommend an evening around Sotogrande Marina, followed by seafood or tapas in Torreguadiaro. Visitors can also explore San Roque’s protected historic centre, where highlights include Saint Mary the Crowned Church, the Governor’s Palace and traditional streets lined with courtyard houses. Beaches around Sotogrande and La Alcaidesa provide plenty of space for swimming, coastal walks and slower afternoons.
Spring and autumn are our preferred seasons for a San Roque golf holiday, combining comfortable playing conditions with excellent course choice and fewer peak-summer crowds.
