Large greens are frequently protected by bunkers positioned tightly along their edges, placing an emphasis on accurate approach play.

The course provides a classic Hilton Head experience, with its combination of tree-lined corridors and open views across water. Although there is enough room from many tees to encourage confident driving, the undulating fairways can create awkward lies and different angles into the greens, rewarding golfers who carefully consider position rather than simply relying on distance.

The Robert Cupp Course offers a noticeably different challenge. Opened in 1993, this bold and innovative par-72 design stretches to 7,079 yards from the back tees. Cupp created a course capable of providing a demanding championship test while still remaining playable from the forward tees, with strong shot values and strategic choices forming an important part of the experience.

When the Robert Cupp Course originally opened, its back tees carried the highest slope rating in South Carolina at 152, illustrating just how demanding the layout could be for accomplished players. Practice facilities are available at Palmetto Hall and are open to visiting golfers as well as members, while professional instruction is offered through the Heritage Golf Academy.
