Wild Dunes Golf Club

Charleston

average rating is 4 out of 5

Set on Isle of Palms, just outside Charleston, South Carolina, Wild Dunes Golf offers 36 holes of championship golf across two contrasting courses designed by renowned American architect Tom Fazio. The Links Course and Harbor Course make full use of their coastal surroundings, combining Atlantic Ocean views, tidal marshland, mature trees and strategically placed hazards to create two distinctly different Lowcountry golf experiences.

The Links Course is the original layout at Wild Dunes and holds particular significance as Tom Fazio's first solo design. Playing to a par of 70 and measuring 6,503 yards, the course features rolling fairways framed by palms and live oaks before building towards a memorable stretch of holes beside the Atlantic Ocean. Coastal breezes can have a major influence on club selection, while strategically positioned bunkers and renovated greens reward golfers who think carefully about their approach to each hole.

One of the standout holes is the par-three 12th, which requires a partially blind shot across native dunes. The course becomes increasingly dramatic towards the finish as it reaches the shoreline, culminating in the 18th, now played as a scenic par three beside the ocean. This spectacular coastal ending has become one of the defining features of golf at Wild Dunes.

The Harbor Course provides a very different challenge. Also designed by Tom Fazio, it measures 6,359 yards and plays to a par of 71. Rather than open ocean scenery, the course winds through lagoons, tidal marshes and alongside the Intracoastal Waterway. Water comes into play on almost every hole, placing a greater emphasis on accuracy, positioning and thoughtful shot selection.

Following an $8 million renovation, the Harbor Course now features redesigned bunkers, improved greens and updates intended to enhance both playability and long-term course conditions. Its mix of shorter strategic holes and longer tests creates a course where good decision-making can be more valuable than outright distance, providing an excellent contrast to the Links Course.

Practice facilities are centred around the Links Course, where golfers have access to a driving range and chipping green, while the Harbor Course has its own putting green beside the first tee. Club rental and professional golf instruction are also available across the resort.

With two Tom Fazio-designed championship courses in one oceanfront resort, Wild Dunes is particularly well suited to a South Carolina golf holiday. The Links delivers memorable Atlantic scenery and classic coastal golf, while the Harbor provides a tighter, more strategic test among the marshes and waterways of the Lowcountry.
