Trump Turnberry Resort
Girvan
Trump Turnberry Resort is one of Scotland’s most distinctive golf hotels, sitting high above the Ayrshire coastline with views across the Firth of Clyde towards Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran. For golfers, it is difficult to imagine a more impressive setting. You have championship links golf on the doorstep, excellent dining, a full spa and some of the best coastal scenery in Scotland, all around an hour from Glasgow Airport.
The landmark Edwardian hotel dates back to 1906 and has retained much of its grand character while offering the comfort you would expect from a luxury golf resort. There are 204 guest rooms, including a selection of suites, with many overlooking the golf courses or the sea. For something particularly special, the Turnberry Lighthouse also houses a two-bedroom suite above the ruins associated with Robert the Bruce. Self-catering cottages and larger villas are available too, which can work brilliantly for golf groups wanting extra space.
For us, the golf is naturally the biggest reason to stay. The resort is home to the Ailsa Course, a four-time Open Championship venue and one of the great names in Scottish links golf. Its coastal holes around the Turnberry Lighthouse provide some unforgettable views and a proper test when the wind arrives.
Alongside it is the King Robert the Bruce Course, another excellent championship layout with spectacular holes overlooking the sea. Having two full 18-hole courses at the resort makes Turnberry particularly good for a multi-night stay, while the nine-hole Arran Course and extensive Golf Academy provide even more opportunities to play or practise.
There is plenty to enjoy once the clubs have been put away. The Spa at Turnberry includes a 20-metre swimming pool with views towards the coast, alongside saunas, steam rooms, thermal facilities, treatment rooms and a fitness centre. Horse riding and clay pigeon shooting are also available for anyone wanting to experience more of the Ayrshire countryside.
Dining is another highlight. 1906 is the resort’s main fine-dining restaurant, while the Grand Tea Lounge & Bar is ideal for afternoon tea or drinks overlooking the coastline. Golfers can also head to The Duel in the Sun in the clubhouse for a more relaxed meal after a round.
We think Trump Turnberry works particularly well for couples and golf groups looking for a special Scottish golf break where the hotel is as memorable as the courses.
