Vidago Palace Golf Course
Porto
Vidago Palace Golf Course offers a peaceful and characterful round in the wooded countryside of northern Portugal. Set within the historic Vidago Palace estate near Chaves, the course combines mature parkland, mountain scenery and traditional architectural features, providing a very different experience from the coastal layouts of Lisbon and the Algarve.
The original course was created by Mackenzie Ross in 1936 before being redesigned and expanded by Cameron & Powell. Today, it is an 18-hole, par-72 championship course built to USGA specifications, while still preserving much of the landscape and character of the original design.
The round is full of variety. The opening four holes pass through the estate’s century-old park before the course enters the Oura Valley for the following 11 holes. The final three climb back towards higher ground, offering impressive views across the surrounding hills, villages and northern Portuguese countryside. Local stone walls support many of the teeing areas, while mature trees, elevation changes, strategic bunkering and raised greens encourage careful course management.
Golfers will need to judge distances well, particularly when playing from sloping ground or approaching the elevated putting surfaces. The 11th doglegs to the right, while the sharply turning 16th is another hole where positioning from the tee is especially important. Practice facilities include a 340-metre driving range, a chipping area, two putting greens and a golf academy. The clubhouse also offers a restaurant, bar and professional shop.
After golf, guests can experience Vidago’s famous thermal waters or visit nearby Chaves to explore its Roman bridge, medieval castle, historic streets and riverside restaurants. Walking and cycling routes also connect Vidago with Chaves and Pedras Salgadas, making this an excellent choice for golfers who enjoy combining their rounds with spa time, history and quiet countryside.
