Axis Golfe Ponte de Lima
Porto
Axis Golfe Ponte de Lima provides a refreshing alternative to Portugal’s better-known southern golf destinations. Located in the green Minho countryside of northern Portugal, the course combines wooded hills, open farmland and wide views across the Lima Valley.
Opened in 1995, this 18-hole, par-71 layout measures 6,005 metres and was designed by Portuguese architects David and Daniel Silva. Its two loops have noticeably different personalities, giving visiting golfers plenty of variety during the round.
The opening nine climbs through the foothills of Monte da Madalena, passing mature chestnut trees, cork oaks and woodland. Sloping fairways, elevation changes and raised tees make careful positioning important, while several holes provide views towards the River Lima valley and Viana do Castelo. The par-three 8th is particularly memorable, with an elevated tee presenting a dramatic shot to the green below.
The second nine moves into the flatter Quinta de Pias valley, where vineyards, cornfields and fruit trees create a distinctly rural Portuguese setting. Although less physically demanding than the outward loop, water features and changes of direction continue to reward thoughtful course management. The 622-metre par-five 3rd is another standout, recognised as one of Portugal’s longest golf holes.
Practice facilities include a driving range, putting green and chipping area, with equipment hire and tuition also available. The centrally positioned clubhouse offers a restaurant, bar and terrace for a relaxed drink after golf.
Only a few kilometres from historic Ponte de Lima, the course works particularly well for golfers looking to combine an interesting challenge with regional food, Vinho Verde and the character of one of Portugal’s oldest towns.
