Estela Golf Club

Porto

average rating is 4 out of 5

Estela Golf Club offers one of the most authentic links-style golf experiences in northern Portugal, with the course running alongside approximately three kilometres of Atlantic coastline near Póvoa de Varzim. Set amongst natural dunes with the ocean never far away, it is a fantastic contrast to the parkland and resort courses found elsewhere in Portugal. For us, Estela is exactly the sort of course that makes a Porto golf holiday feel genuinely different.

Designed by Portuguese architect Duarte Sotto-Mayor, the 18-hole, par-72 course measures 6,148 metres and has been shaped around the natural coastal landscape rather than imposed upon it. Narrow fairways, dunes, lakes and changing Atlantic winds provide most of the defence, meaning accuracy and course management are far more important than simply reaching for the driver on every tee.

The fairways become particularly demanding around the landing areas, where the surrounding dunes can quickly punish a shot that drifts offline. There are relatively few conventional fairway bunkers because the natural terrain does such a good job of creating its own hazards. Water also appears throughout the course, adding another decision to several tee shots and approaches.

We particularly like how much the Atlantic influences the golf. The coastal breeze can completely change the way a hole plays from one round to the next, so controlling trajectory and judging distance become essential. On calmer days there are opportunities to attack, but when the wind gets up you may find yourself playing completely different clubs into the same greens.

The greens provide another challenge. They are generally firm and quick, rewarding approaches that arrive under control rather than simply flying directly at every flag. Many allow running approaches, which suits the links character of the course and gives you different ways to manufacture a score depending on the conditions.

Practice facilities are excellent, including a 400-metre grass driving range with a covered section and mats, alongside the Golf Academy for anyone wanting to work on their game. The clubhouse facilities include a restaurant, bar and Golf Shop, giving you everything you need before and after your round.

Estela’s location also makes it easy to combine with a few nights exploring Porto, while the beaches and coastal towns north of the city add plenty to a longer trip.

For golfers looking for genuine coastal golf, natural dunes and an ever-changing Atlantic challenge, Estela Golf Club is well worth including. About The Area

I’m treating Pontinhas as the locality on Porto Santo, Madeira, which works really well for a quieter island golf holiday with beach time built in. For golfers who like Madeira but want something softer, sunnier and more laid-back than Funchal, Pontinhas gives you a peaceful base close to Porto Santo’s famous golden coastline.

For golf, the big draw is Porto Santo Golf Club. Designed by Seve Ballesteros, it opened in 2004 and includes an 18-hole course plus a 9-hole par-3 course, making it suitable for both serious golfers and mixed-ability groups. The main course is a proper island experience, with lakes, wide Atlantic views and dramatic cliffside holes, so it feels very different from a standard resort round.

Away from the course, Porto Santo is all about slowing down. The island is famous for its nine-kilometre sandy beach, with golden sand and warm waters, making it ideal for relaxed afternoons after golf. We would also recommend the Porto Santo Promenade, Portela Viewpoint, Calheta Beach for sunset, and a wander around Vila Baleira for food, drinks and local island atmosphere.

Our tip: choose Pontinhas if your group wants a Madeira golf break that feels calm, scenic and easy, with great golf, beach days and proper island charm.
