Oporto Golf Club

Porto

average rating is 4 out of 5

Oporto Golf Club is one of Portugal’s most historic golfing venues, offering a traditional links experience beside the Atlantic coast near Espinho. Founded in 1890 by British residents living in Porto, it is the oldest golf club in Portugal and among the oldest in mainland Europe, giving every round a wonderful sense of heritage and tradition.

Located around 17km south of Porto, the 18-hole, par-71 course measures approximately 5,640 metres. It may appear relatively short by modern standards, but narrow fairways, small greens, natural sandy ground and the prevailing nortada wind ensure that it provides a proper test. Accuracy and sensible positioning are often far more valuable than distance, particularly when the Atlantic breeze begins to strengthen.

The fourth is regarded as one of the course’s most demanding holes, while the 11th is a challenging 494-metre par five where reaching the green in regulation requires two excellent shots. Both nine-hole loops finish with more approachable par fives, creating exciting opportunities to recover shots towards the end of the round. The club’s heritage is also reflected in the Skeffington Cup, a competition first played here in 1891.

Oporto Golf Club is ideal for golfers who enjoy classic courses with character rather than heavily manufactured resort layouts. The traditional clubhouse provides a comfortable setting for food and drinks after the round, while the nearby town of Espinho is known for its sandy beaches, seafront walks, surfing and seafood restaurants.

Porto is also within easy reach and deserves time before or after golf. Visitors can explore the historic Ribeira district, cross the Luís I Bridge, visit the Port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia or enjoy the city’s excellent restaurants and riverside bars. Oporto Golf Club is a superb choice for golfers wanting to combine genuine links golf with the culture, food and wine of northern Portugal.
