Amarante Golfing
Porto
Amarante Golf Course offers a wonderfully different golfing experience in northern Portugal, surrounded by wooded hills, mountain scenery and the vineyard-covered landscapes found close to the Douro Valley. Located at Quinta da Deveza near the historic town of Amarante, this peaceful inland course is an excellent choice for golfers wanting to explore beyond Portugal’s better-known coastal golf destinations.
Opened in 1997 and designed by Portuguese architect Jorge Santana da Silva, the 18-hole, par-68 course sits approximately 600 metres above sea level. Although it is not especially long, the hilly terrain, narrow fairways and frequent changes in elevation ensure there is plenty to think about throughout the round. Accurate tee shots and careful distance control are more valuable here than outright power, while bunkers and lakes protect several of the greens.
The memorable fourth hole is a short par four where the approach must find a raised and particularly narrow green. Water also influences holes three, eight, twelve and seventeen, adding extra pressure when golfers are chasing a good score. Because of the course’s slopes, we recommend hiring a buggy or electric trolley, particularly during warmer weather.
After golf, players can relax at the clubhouse bar and terrace before exploring Amarante. The town is known for its attractive riverside setting, São Gonçalo Bridge and historic church, as well as its cafés, traditional restaurants and local pastries. Visitors can also walk or cycle along the former Tâmega railway line, explore nearby vineyards or travel into the Douro Valley for wine tasting and spectacular scenery.
Amarante Golf Course is ideal for golfers who enjoy scenic, strategic layouts and want to combine their round with northern Portugal’s food, wine, history and countryside.
