Rio Real Golf
Marbella
Rio Real Golf is one of Marbella’s classic golf courses, combining traditional Spanish course design with mature Mediterranean scenery and a memorable setting close to the sea. Located just five minutes from Marbella town centre, the course follows the Rio Real River towards the Mediterranean, giving the layout a natural character that feels very different from many of the newer resort courses along the Costa del Sol.
Designed by legendary Spanish golf architect Javier Arana, Rio Real opened in 1965 and remains one of his best-known layouts. The 18-hole, par-72 course measures more than 6,000 metres, with the changing terrain and variety of holes encouraging golfers to use virtually every club in the bag.
What we particularly like about Rio Real is how naturally the course fits into its surroundings. The river plays an important part in the layout as it works its way towards the coast, while mature pines, palms, olive trees, cypresses and casuarinas frame the fairways. There are also elevated sections where choosing the correct club becomes particularly important, adding plenty of variety to the round.
Several holes bring you remarkably close to the Mediterranean, creating some of the most memorable moments on the course. The combination of sea views, established trees and the river gives Rio Real a sense of place that is difficult to manufacture. It feels unmistakably like Marbella golf rather than a course that could have been built anywhere.
Although the course is suitable for a wide range of handicaps, good positioning is rewarded. Arana’s design gives golfers clear strategic choices, with the safest route not always producing the easiest approach. Better players can take on more aggressive lines, while higher-handicap golfers still have sensible routes through the holes when playing from the appropriate tees.
The Rio Real Golf Academy is available for anyone wanting to work on their game, with coaching covering every area from full-swing technique to the short game. Modern teaching facilities include 3D biomechanics analysis, allowing lessons to be tailored around individual swing characteristics.
Golfers also have access to buggy and club hire, electric and manual trolleys, changing facilities and a Pro Shop. Rio Real Golf & Hotel sits directly beside the course, with El Club Restaurant and its terrace providing an ideal spot for lunch or drinks after the round.
For us, Rio Real is a particularly strong addition to a Marbella golf holiday because it combines history, scenery and an excellent location close to the city. About The Area
Alhaurín el Grande is one of the Costa del Sol’s most appealing inland golf bases, offering traditional Andalusian charm while sitting within easy reach of Málaga, Marbella and a dense cluster of quality championship courses. Nestled in the Guadalhorce Valley and framed by the Sierra de Mijas mountains, it provides scenic, elevated golf in a quieter setting away from the busier coastal resorts.
The town’s signature layout is Alhaurin Golf, designed by Seve Ballesteros. This challenging and characterful course is known for its dramatic elevation changes, narrow driving lines and demanding approach shots into well-guarded greens. It’s a layout that rewards accuracy and course management rather than power. Nearby, Lauro Golf offers a contrasting experience with its 27-hole configuration, wider fairways and more forgiving routing through olive groves and gently rolling terrain. Within 30 minutes, La Cala Golf Resort provides three championship courses — Asia, America and Europa — making it ideal for multi-round itineraries.
Golf in this part of the Costa del Sol is typically dry underfoot with reliable greens, benefiting from over 300 days of sunshine per year. Spring (March–June) and autumn (September–November) are particularly comfortable for walking golf, avoiding peak summer heat.
Off the course, Alhaurín el Grande retains strong Spanish character, with whitewashed buildings, lively plazas and traditional tapas bars serving local wines and grilled meats. The coastline at Fuengirola and Marbella is easily accessible for beachside dining, while Málaga’s cultural scene — including the Picasso Museum and historic Alcazaba fortress — adds depth to any trip.
For golfers seeking elevated inland courses, scenic mountain backdrops and authentic Andalusian atmosphere without the bustle of the coast, Alhaurín el Grande offers a well-balanced and characterful Costa del Sol golf escape.
