The Alto Club Golf
Sotogrande
The Alto Club is a stylish and modern golf venue set among the rolling hills and pine forests of Sotogrande in southern Spain. Formerly known as Almenara Golf, the club was relaunched under its new identity in 2025, combining an 18-hole championship course with an advanced golf academy and a purpose-built nine-hole par-three layout.
The main course was originally designed by respected British architect Dave Thomas and later refined by former Ryder Cup player Manuel Piñero. Its two nines provide contrasting experiences, moving from elevated, pine-lined fairways into holes where lakes and water hazards have a much greater influence on strategy. Changes in elevation, deep bunkers and subtle natural contours ensure golfers must think carefully about positioning rather than simply relying on power.
Accuracy from the tee is particularly useful among the trees, where finding the correct side of the fairway can open up a much clearer route towards the green. The water-lined holes introduce some enjoyable risk-and-reward decisions, while the course’s raised positions provide attractive views across the Mediterranean countryside. It offers enough variety to interest confident players while remaining approachable for mixed-handicap groups.
The Alto Club Golf Academy is led by former Solheim Cup captain Suzann Pettersen and includes Toptracer technology, covered and natural-grass practice tees, swing-analysis studios, custom fitting and extensive short-game areas. Golfers can also play the nine-hole par-three course designed by Manuel Piñero, which is ideal for improving distance control, iron play and creativity around the greens.
After the round, the SoCiety Clubhouse offers relaxed dining and drinks from a terrace overlooking the course and Mediterranean Sea. Golfers can also visit Sotogrande Marina for waterfront restaurants, boutiques and bars, spend time on the local beaches or explore the nearby Andalusian coastline.
