Barceló Montecastillo Golf Club delivers a genuine championship test on the outskirts of Jerez de la Frontera. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, the course combines strategic bunkering, substantial water hazards and elevated tees with open views across the Andalusian countryside.
The 18-hole, par-72 layout measures approximately 6,450 metres from the back tees. Different teeing options make it manageable for a range of handicaps, but confident ball-striking and sensible course management are essential for a good score. Generous landing areas are frequently narrowed by fairway bunkers, while large, well-defended greens place additional importance on choosing the correct approach angle.
Montecastillo’s tournament pedigree confirms the quality of the challenge. It staged the European Tour’s season-ending Volvo Masters for five consecutive years from 1997 to 2001, testing many of the leading players of that era.
The par fives provide tempting risk-and-reward opportunities, while water becomes increasingly influential during the closing stretch. The signature 18th begins from an elevated tee around 40 metres above the fairway. A lake follows the left side towards the green, with the resort and castle-style clubhouse overlooking the hole from the right. It is an impressive finish that rewards a controlled drive and an accurately judged approach.
Practice facilities include a driving range, putting and chipping greens, an enlarged pitch-and-putt area and a golf academy. Equipment hire is available, and the on-site resort makes Montecastillo particularly convenient for groups planning several rounds without daily transfers.
Jerez also adds plenty beyond the course, including historic sherry bodegas, flamenco traditions and the city’s celebrated equestrian culture.
