Hacienda del Álamo Golf is one of the most substantial championship golf courses in Spain’s Region of Murcia. Located at Fuente Álamo between Cartagena and the beaches of Mazarrón, the course is now officially known as Santa Elena Golf Club, although many visiting golfers will still recognise it by its long-established Hacienda del Álamo name.

Designed by former Ryder Cup player and respected golf architect Dave Thomas, the 18-hole, par-72 course stretches to 6,724 metres from the championship tees. That makes it a serious test from the back, but several teeing options allow golfers to shorten the course considerably and choose a distance that suits their game.

What we particularly like about Hacienda del Álamo is the sense of space. Wide fairways encourage you to take the driver, but this is certainly not a course where you can simply hit away without thinking. Large bunkers, lakes and strategically positioned hazards continually influence the best route towards the greens, while the length of the course means good club selection becomes increasingly important on the longer par 4s and par 5s.

The open Murcian landscape gives the course a distinctive character. Palm trees and Mediterranean planting break up the broad fairways, while the dry climate and expansive views create a very different experience from the more densely developed golf areas farther along Spain’s Mediterranean coast. Wind can also become a factor, adding another layer to a course already capable of providing a substantial challenge.

Practice facilities are a major strength. Alongside the championship layout is an Executive Course designed for beginners and practice, while the main training complex includes a driving range, two putting greens, a chipping green and dedicated practice bunkers. Golf tuition and swing-analysis facilities are also available, making this a particularly good option for groups wanting to combine their rounds with some structured practice.

The clubhouse provides a restaurant, café, Pro Shop and changing facilities, while buggies, electric trolleys, manual trolleys and rental clubs are available. The wider Hacienda del Álamo resort also includes accommodation, sports facilities and the Ona Hacienda del Álamo Golf Resort, so staying close to the first tee is straightforward.
