San Roque Golf Club
Cadiz
The San Roque Club is one of southern Spain’s most prestigious golfing venues, offering championship golf in the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja near Sotogrande. Surrounded by mature cork oak trees and peaceful Andalusian countryside, the club provides a beautifully established parkland experience within easy reach of the Mediterranean coast and Gibraltar.
The club’s Old Course was created by Dave Thomas in 1990, with its bunkers later redesigned by Seve Ballesteros. The 18-hole, par-72 layout measures 6,311 metres and reopened in 2021 following a major renovation. Its gently rolling fairways move between mature woodland, strategically positioned bunkers and water hazards, creating a course where accuracy and intelligent positioning are more valuable than power alone.
Golfers must regularly consider the best side of the fairway from which to approach the greens. Drives that stray among the trees can leave restricted recovery shots, while the carefully shaped bunkers place extra pressure on iron play and distance control. Multiple teeing options allow holiday golfers to choose a suitable challenge, but the longer tees provide a demanding test for confident and lower-handicap players.
The Old Course has an impressive tournament history. It hosted the final stage of the European Tour Qualifying School for 15 consecutive years between 1993 and 2007, as well as the 2005 Spanish Open. This pedigree, combined with its mature surroundings and excellent presentation, makes it a particularly appealing addition to a Sotogrande golf holiday.
After the round, golfers can enjoy food and drinks at the clubhouse before exploring the surrounding area. Sotogrande Marina offers waterfront restaurants, bars and boutiques, while nearby beaches provide a relaxed place to spend the afternoon. Visitors can also cross into Gibraltar, watch world-class polo or enjoy a boat trip along the coast.
