Villamartín Golf

Alicante

average rating is 4 out of 5

Villamartín Golf is one of the Costa Blanca’s most established courses, offering a mature and characterful round near the beaches of Orihuela Costa. Opened in 1972, the course has developed beautifully over the decades, with tall Mediterranean pines, olive trees and established vegetation framing the fairways.

Designed by Robert Dean Putman, the 18-hole, par-72 layout measures 6,132 metres from the white tees. Unlike many modern resort courses, Villamartín follows the natural shape of the land, creating a varied round in which no two holes feel the same. The higher front nine provides attractive views towards the Mediterranean, while the back nine moves through lower valleys where trees and natural ravines have a greater influence on play.

Good positioning is more important than raw power. Golfers must negotiate doglegs, mature woodland and changes in elevation, with the best route into the greens often determined by the accuracy of the tee shot. Approach play is equally important, as the established greens and surrounding hazards can quickly punish golfers attacking from the wrong angle.

The signature 17th is a memorable par three requiring a demanding carry across a deep, tree-lined ravine. From the back tee, the hole stretches to around 200 metres, with an undulating green waiting on the other side. It is a proper test of commitment, distance control and nerve late in the round.

Villamartín also has strong tournament pedigree, having hosted the 1994 Mediterranean Open, won by José María Olazábal following a play-off with Paul McGinley. Practice facilities include a driving range, while buggy hire, equipment rental and a professional shop are also available. After golf, the renovated clubhouse restaurant and roof terrace overlook the 18th green, providing an excellent setting for food, drinks and post-round analysis.

Away from the course, golfers can visit the beaches of La Zenia, Cabo Roig and Campoamor, enjoy the restaurants and bars around Villamartín Plaza, or explore the coastal walks and marina areas of Orihuela Costa.

About The Area

Sant Jordi is a quiet inland village in northern Castellón, close to the Costa Azahar coastline. It works well for golfers who want a peaceful base with easy access to beaches, small towns and a proper golf-focused resort setting. Castellón Tourism describes Sant Jordi as being around 12 km from Vinaròs and only around 8 minutes from the beaches of the Costa Azahar, so it gives you a nice mix of countryside calm and coastal access.

The main golf draw is Panorámica Golf, Sport & Resort, located in Sant Jordi. Opened in 1995, the course is set among olive and carob trees and is especially notable because it is the only golf course in Spain designed by Bernhard Langer. The official course information describes it as one of the best courses in Spain, while booking/course listings put the layout at 18 holes, par 72, measuring around 6,330–6,429 metres depending on tee/source reference.

For a golf holiday, Sant Jordi is best treated as a stay-and-play or quiet Costa Azahar base rather than a lively resort town. The course gives golfers the main reason to stay locally, while nearby Vinaròs, Benicarló and Peñíscola add beaches, seafood, old-town wandering and evening options. It is also useful for travellers who want something less obvious than the Costa del Sol or Alicante golf areas.

For Hashtag Golf Travel customers, Sant Jordi works best as a relaxed Spain golf escape, a value-led Costa Azahar break, or part of a wider Valencia/Castellón itinerary. It is not the place for big nightlife, but for peaceful surroundings, good golf, beaches nearby and a quieter Spanish feel, it fits nicely.
