Alicante Golf is an attractive 18-hole course in Playa de San Juan, close to the Mediterranean coast and only a few minutes from Alicante city centre. Broad fairways, palm trees, ornamental lakes and fast greens create a colourful urban parkland setting, while the nearby beach, restaurants and city attractions make the course an easy addition to a Costa Blanca golf holiday.
Designed by Spanish golfing legend Severiano Ballesteros, Alicante Golf opened in 1998. The par-72 layout measures approximately 6,236 metres from its longest tees and has an unusual arrangement of six par threes, six par fours and six par fives. No two consecutive holes have the same par, which gives the scorecard plenty of variety and prevents the round from falling into a predictable rhythm.
The fairways are generally wide and there are no blind shots, making the course approachable for holiday golfers and mixed-handicap groups. However, Alicante Golf is far from an easy resort layout. Five large lakes influence 12 holes, while bunkers, changing angles and quick putting surfaces place plenty of pressure on club selection and distance control.
Ballesteros designed the course to reward golfers who think carefully from the tee. Playing towards the correct side of a fairway can open a far clearer route to the flag, while a misplaced drive may leave water, sand or an awkward angle blocking the approach. The mixture of short holes, reachable par fives and testing par fours creates regular opportunities to attack, but careless decisions can quickly lead to dropped shots.
One of the course’s most distinctive features appears on the 14th hole. During construction, workers discovered the remains of a Roman villa dating from the first century. Rather than moving or covering the ruins, Ballesteros changed the design so that they could be preserved within the golf course.
Alicante Golf has hosted several professional tournaments, including the Levante Cup, the Spanish PGA Championship and the final of the Peugeot Tour of Spain. Pepín Rivero established the course record of 62 during the 2003 Spanish PGA Championship, a score that the club states remains unbeaten.
