Carnoustie Golf Links is one of Scotland’s most celebrated golf destinations, offering three distinctive courses beside the Angus coastline. The headline attraction is its formidable Championship Course, although the Burnside and Buddon Links make Carnoustie equally appealing for a varied multi-round golf break.

The Championship Course measures 6,945 yards with a par of 72 from the white tees. Its narrow landing areas, deep revetted bunkers, thick rough and winding burns demand sound strategy rather than reckless aggression. The challenge builds throughout the round, from the intimidating drive at the par-five sixth, Hogan’s Alley, to a famous closing stretch where the Barry Burn repeatedly threatens the scorecard.

Carnoustie has hosted The Open eight times, producing champions including Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Tom Watson, Paul Lawrie, Pádraig Harrington and Francesco Molinari. Following earlier work by Allan Robertson and Old Tom Morris, James Braid shaped much of the course’s modern character in 1926.

The Burnside Course is a par-68 layout measuring 5,963 yards. Shorter but still strategically demanding, it combines undulating fairways, natural burns and well-protected greens. Ben Hogan played the Burnside during qualifying before winning the 1953 Open, adding further historical interest.

Completing the trio is the Buddon Links, a 5,921-yard, par-68 course originally designed by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas. Its mixture of open links terrain, heather, trees and water offers a more forgiving introduction to Carnoustie while still rewarding thoughtful play.

Links House contains the professional shop, changing facilities and The Rookery restaurant, which overlooks the courses and Carnoustie Bay. Golfers can also use the indoor Performance Centre, featuring seven practice bays with Foresight launch-monitor technology. Caddies and equipment hire are available, while handicap limits currently apply to visitors.
