Quinta do Peru Golf & Country Club is a beautifully presented parkland course set near Azeitão, south of Lisbon. Framed by the Serra da Arrábida and surrounded by mature pine trees, wildflowers and peaceful countryside, it provides a scenic escape from the capital while remaining close enough to include in a Lisbon golf holiday.
Opened in 1994 and designed by American architect Rocky Roquemore, the 18-hole, par-72 course measures 6,036 metres from the back tees. Its tree-lined fairways, thoughtful bunkering and fast, true-rolling greens create a strategic test that rewards accuracy and careful positioning. The layout is playable enough for holiday golfers and mixed-handicap groups, but the longer tees provide a much sterner challenge for experienced players.
Water adds both drama and difficulty to several of the most memorable holes. The short eighth requires a confident approach over a lake guarding the green, while the par-four 12th has water running alongside the fairway towards the putting surface. Later in the round, the 178-metre par-three 16th asks golfers to carry another lake, making club selection particularly important when the wind begins to move.
Quinta do Peru also has excellent practice facilities, including a driving range, putting green, chipping area and practice bunker. After the round, golfers can visit the welcoming clubhouse, where the restaurant, bar and sunny terrace provide a relaxed place to compare scorecards.
Away from the course, the Azeitão area is known for its vineyards, wine tasting, cheeses and traditional food. Golfers can also explore the beaches and walking trails of Arrábida Natural Park, enjoy seafood beside the water in Sesimbra or Setúbal, or travel into Lisbon for historic neighbourhoods, restaurants and nightlife. The club also arranges local experiences including wine tasting, birdwatching and Atlantic boat trips.

About The Area
Setúbal is a brilliant choice for a golf holiday in Portugal, combining excellent courses with dramatic coastal scenery, traditional Portuguese food and a more relaxed atmosphere than nearby Lisbon. Situated around 45 kilometres south of the capital, the city is easy to reach from Lisbon Airport while still feeling like a destination in its own right.
Golfers have several impressive courses within easy travelling distance. Montado Hotel & Golf Resort is approximately 15 minutes from central Setúbal and is known for its memorable finishing hole, where the green sits on an island. Quinta do Peru offers an attractive woodland layout near Azeitão, while PGA Aroeira provides two contrasting courses among tall pine trees. Across the River Sado, the Robert Trent Jones Sr-designed Troia Golf Course occupies a spectacular peninsula between the estuary and Atlantic Ocean. Troia is undergoing a major renovation and is currently scheduled to reopen in early 2027.
Away from the golf course, Setúbal is particularly well known for its seafood. The colourful Mercado do Livramento is a great place to experience everyday local life, with stalls selling freshly caught fish, regional cheeses, fruit and produce. Restaurants throughout the city serve specialities such as grilled fish, oysters and choco frito—Setúbal’s famous fried cuttlefish.
The surrounding landscape is one of the area’s biggest attractions. Arrábida Natural Park stretches between Setúbal and Sesimbra, bringing together forested hills, white limestone cliffs and sheltered beaches such as Galapos, Figueirinha and Portinho da Arrábida. Boat trips into the Sado Estuary also offer the chance to see its resident bottlenose dolphins.
Spring and autumn are especially good for a Setúbal golf holiday, with comfortable playing temperatures and fewer summer visitors. With quality golf, beaches, wine country and Lisbon all within reach, Setúbal works equally well for a dedicated golf break or a longer Portuguese escape.
