Estoril Golf Club
Estoril
Estoril Golf Club is one of Portugal’s most historic golf venues, offering a traditional parkland challenge close to the beaches, hotels and restaurants of the Lisbon Coast. Overlooking Estoril and the Atlantic Ocean, the course is set among eucalyptus, mimosa and pine trees, creating a mature and colourful setting that feels very different from the region’s newer resort layouts.
Golf was first played here in 1929, with the course later expanded and redesigned by Scottish architect Philip Mackenzie Ross. The main 18-hole course plays to a par of 69 and measures approximately 5,200 metres. It is relatively short by modern standards, but narrow fairways, uneven terrain, mature trees and compact targets ensure accuracy is far more valuable than distance.
Golfers need to think carefully about placement from the tee, as shots played into the wrong areas can leave restricted approaches beneath overhanging branches. The par threes are among the course’s highlights, including the fourth, known as the Peppers Hole, and the eighth, nicknamed the Tea Cup because of its famously difficult flag positions. The layout has hosted the Portuguese Open on numerous occasions, giving it an impressive tournament pedigree despite its manageable length.
Estoril also offers a nine-hole course, driving range, putting greens, practice bunkers and a large chipping area. Experienced caddies are available and can be particularly useful for first-time visitors navigating the course’s slopes, trees and less obvious playing lines. After golf, the clubhouse restaurant, bars and terrace provide views across the closing green and towards the Atlantic.
Away from the course, golfers can relax on Tamariz Beach, visit Casino Estoril or follow the seafront promenade into Cascais for seafood restaurants, bars and marina views. Lisbon and the palaces of Sintra are also close enough for an easy day trip.

About The Area
Estoril is a brilliant choice for golfers who want a Portugal golf holiday with classic coastal glamour, easy Lisbon access and excellent courses close by. Set on the Lisbon Coast between the capital and Cascais, it combines beach time, restaurants, casino evenings, seafront walks and a polished resort feel, making it ideal for couples, groups and short golf breaks.
The main golfing highlight is Estoril Golf Club, one of Portugal’s oldest and most emblematic clubs. The Estoril Championship Course began in 1929 and was redesigned in 1936 by Mackenzie Ross. It is just 25 minutes from Lisbon and only a few minutes from hotels, restaurants, the casino and Estoril beach, which makes it wonderfully convenient for a golf holiday. The 18-hole, par-69 course measures around 5,200 metres and places more emphasis on accuracy and tactics than sheer power.
Estoril also works well for golfers who want more variety. Penha Longa, Quinta da Marinha and Oitavos Dunes are all within easy reach around Cascais and Sintra, giving you access to parkland, resort and Atlantic-influenced golf within one trip.
Away from the fairways, the wider Cascais area adds beaches, seafood, museums, parks, gardens and year-round events, while Lisbon is close enough for sightseeing, rooftop bars, Fado nights and historic neighbourhoods.
For UK golfers, Estoril is ideal for a tailor-made Portugal golf break, whether you want a relaxed Lisbon Coast escape or a multi-course itinerary. Hashtag Golf Travel can help plan the right hotels, tee times, transfers and extras.
