Penha Longa Atlântico Golf Course

Estoril

average rating is 4 out of 5

Penha Longa Atlântico Golf Course is an outstanding championship layout set among the wooded hills of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. Surrounded by pine forest, rolling valleys and historic architecture, it offers a peaceful and highly scenic round within easy reach of Lisbon, Cascais and the Atlantic coastline.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 1992, the 18-hole, par-72 course measures approximately 6,313 metres. The layout follows the natural rise and fall of the Sintra foothills, with elevated tees, sloping fairways, water hazards and strategically positioned bunkers creating a varied test from start to finish. The course has also hosted the Portuguese Open, adding genuine tournament pedigree to the experience.

Accuracy and thoughtful positioning are especially important at Penha Longa. The opening holes gradually descend through the landscape before the course begins its climb back towards the resort and historic monastery. Golfers who find the correct section of the fairway will benefit from clearer angles into the greens, while missed drives can leave difficult approaches from sloping ground or behind trees.

Water adds drama to several holes, while the course’s short par fours and reachable par fives provide tempting risk-and-reward opportunities. The ancient stone aqueduct near the sixth and seventh holes gives this section of the course a particularly distinctive character. Changes in elevation and the occasional Atlantic breeze also make distance control and club selection essential.

After golf, players can relax at the clubhouse or enjoy the restaurants, bars and spa facilities within Penha Longa Resort. Nearby Sintra is known for its colourful palaces, gardens and historic streets, while Cascais offers beaches, seafood restaurants and a lively marina. Lisbon is also close enough for an evening of sightseeing, dining and nightlife.

About The Area

Estoril is a brilliant choice for golfers who want a Portugal golf holiday with classic coastal glamour, easy Lisbon access and excellent courses close by. Set on the Lisbon Coast between the capital and Cascais, it combines beach time, restaurants, casino evenings, seafront walks and a polished resort feel, making it ideal for couples, groups and short golf breaks.

The main golfing highlight is Estoril Golf Club, one of Portugal’s oldest and most emblematic clubs. The Estoril Championship Course began in 1929 and was redesigned in 1936 by Mackenzie Ross. It is just 25 minutes from Lisbon and only a few minutes from hotels, restaurants, the casino and Estoril beach, which makes it wonderfully convenient for a golf holiday. The 18-hole, par-69 course measures around 5,200 metres and places more emphasis on accuracy and tactics than sheer power.

Estoril also works well for golfers who want more variety. Penha Longa, Quinta da Marinha and Oitavos Dunes are all within easy reach around Cascais and Sintra, giving you access to parkland, resort and Atlantic-influenced golf within one trip.

Away from the fairways, the wider Cascais area adds beaches, seafood, museums, parks, gardens and year-round events, while Lisbon is close enough for sightseeing, rooftop bars, Fado nights and historic neighbourhoods.

For UK golfers, Estoril is ideal for a tailor-made Portugal golf break, whether you want a relaxed Lisbon Coast escape or a multi-course itinerary. Hashtag Golf Travel can help plan the right hotels, tee times, transfers and extras.
