Guardian Bom Sucesso Golf

Caldas da Rainha

average rating is 4 out of 5

Guardian Bom Sucesso Golf is an 18-hole championship course beside the Óbidos Lagoon on Portugal’s Silver Coast. Designed by respected British architect Donald Steel, the par-72 layout opened in 2008 and occupies more than 60 hectares within Bom Sucesso Resort.

Steel incorporated the existing landscape into a traditional, strategic design featuring broad putting surfaces, lakes and carefully positioned bunkers. The course is playable for a wide range of handicaps, but its generous greens can leave demanding long putts when approach shots finish in the wrong area.

The two halves offer different experiences. The opening nine crosses relatively level ground, while the inward nine moves into more undulating terrain bordered by eucalyptus woodland. Elevated sections provide attractive views towards the Óbidos Lagoon and Atlantic coast, with the breeze adding another consideration when selecting clubs.

The par-five 2nd is an early strategic test, doglegging to the right beside a lake and requiring an accurate approach. Another highlight is the par-five 17th, situated on the highest part of the course. Its elevated setting provides some of the round’s finest lagoon views, but the steeply sloping ground on the left can quickly turn a small error into a difficult recovery.

The par-four 18th creates a dramatic finish. Golfers must negotiate two water channels on the way to a green overlooked by the clubhouse, ensuring the round remains demanding until the final shot.

Facilities include practice areas, buggy and trolley hire, rental clubs and an available caddie service. The clubhouse has a restaurant and terrace overlooking the closing hole, providing a convenient setting for food and drinks after golf.

Accommodation is available within Bom Sucesso Resort, while nearby Royal Óbidos, Praia D’El Rey and West Cliffs make this one of Portugal’s strongest bases for a multi-course holiday.

About The Area

Caldas da Rainha is a brilliant base for a Portugal golf holiday on the Silver Coast, especially for golfers who want top-quality courses, beaches, food and authentic Portuguese character without the busier feel of the Algarve. The city is known for its thermal heritage, D. Carlos I Park, ceramics, markets and the Bordallo Pinheiro artistic legacy, giving it plenty of local charm between rounds.

The golf nearby is excellent. Royal Óbidos Golf Course was designed by Seve Ballesteros and offers a championship test with Atlantic views. West Cliffs, designed by Cynthia Dye, is one of Portugal’s standout modern courses, set beside the sea among dunes and coastal vegetation. Praia D’El Rey adds another superb option, with golf through pine forest and undulating dunes, plus views over the Atlantic and Berlengas Islands.

Away from the fairways, Caldas da Rainha works beautifully for a relaxed coastal golf break. Foz do Arelho is part of the municipality and sits between Óbidos Lagoon and the Atlantic, giving visitors beaches, lagoon scenery and a lovely mix of calm water and wilder ocean coastline. Nearby Óbidos, Nazaré, Peniche and the wider Silver Coast also make easy day trips.

For UK golfers, Caldas da Rainha is ideal for a tailor-made Portugal golf holiday, especially when combined with Lisbon, Óbidos or the wider Silver Coast. Hashtag Golf Travel can help plan the right hotels, tee times, transfers and extras.
