Bernhard Langer designed the 18-hole layout through the floodplain of the River Rott, using streams, drainage channels and ponds to make position the defining skill. From the back tees the par-72 course measures approximately 6,500 metres. Length matters, but it is only one part of the challenge. Several drive zones are narrower than they first appear, and water can pinch the fairway at exactly the distance stronger players expect to land the ball.
