Frégate Provence Golf & Country Club

Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer

average rating is 4 out of 5

Frégate Provence Golf & Country Club combines challenging championship golf with some of the most impressive coastal scenery in southern France. Set among the vineyards and pine-covered hills above Bandol, between Marseille and Toulon, the club overlooks the Mediterranean and forms part of the four-star Le Frégate Provence resort.

The centrepiece is the Frégate Course, an 18-hole, par-71 layout designed by American architect Ronald Fream and opened in 1992. Measuring approximately 6,210 metres from the back tees, the course makes full use of its dramatic hillside setting, with elevation changes, narrow landing areas and strategically positioned hazards demanding accurate driving and confident approach play. The club highlights 15 viewpoints across the Mediterranean, while vineyards and mature pine trees give the inland sections a distinctly Provençal character.

Frégate is not a course where golfers simply reach for the driver on every tee. Sloping fairways, changes in elevation and exposed holes affected by the coastal breeze make course management important throughout the round. Visiting golfers particularly praise the spectacular layout and sea views, while reviews also regularly describe the course as technical and physically demanding. A buggy can therefore be a useful addition, particularly during warmer months.

The club also offers Frégalon, a nine-hole, par-29 course designed by Fream. Sheltered beneath the pine trees, it provides a more forgiving environment for beginners, coaching sessions and golfers looking to sharpen their short game. An on-site golf academy, driving range, putting facilities, pro shop and clubhouse complete the golf offering.

With Le Frégate Provence hotel beside the course, golfers can create an easy stay-and-play holiday without daily transfers. For a longer Provence golf holiday, rounds can also be combined with courses such as Sainte-Baume and Golf de Barbaroux, while nearby Bandol and Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer provide beaches, restaurants and the region’s famous vineyards for time away from the fairways.

About The Area

Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer is a superb choice for a golf holiday on the French Mediterranean, combining spectacular coastal golf with sandy beaches, Provençal villages and the vineyards of Bandol. Set between Marseille and Toulon, it offers a more relaxed atmosphere than the larger Côte d’Azur resorts while still being easy to reach. Toulon-Hyères Airport is around 53 kilometres away, with Marseille Provence Airport approximately 65 kilometres from Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer. (Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer Tourism)

The standout attraction is Le Frégate Golf Club, designed by American architect Ronald Fream and opened in 1992. The main 18-hole Frégate Course climbs and falls through vineyards, pine trees and rocky Mediterranean terrain, offering numerous viewpoints across the sea and towards the Bay of Bandol. Its technical, undulating design rewards accurate driving and good course management, while the nine-hole Frégalon course provides a gentler option for beginners or an additional shorter round.

Away from golf, Les Lecques has almost two kilometres of sandy beach, alongside restaurants and a wide choice of watersports. La Madrague offers a smaller beach and traditional harbour, while the protected Calanque de Port d’Alon is surrounded by pine forest and clear Mediterranean water.

Walkers can follow sections of the coastal path towards Bandol, passing cliffs, secluded coves and Mediterranean woodland. Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer is also part of the Bandol PDO wine region, where vineyards specialise particularly in Mourvèdre-based reds and rosés.

We particularly recommend Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer for a spring or early-autumn golf break, when you can combine a memorable round at Frégate with beaches, vineyard visits and long Provençal lunches beside the Mediterranean.
