Golf de Massane is a brilliant option for golfers looking to combine Mediterranean golf with the culture, food and sunshine of southern France. Located at Baillargues, just outside Montpellier, the course sits within around 70 hectares of countryside and forms part of the wider Horizon Resort Massane. For us, it works particularly well for golfers wanting a relaxed golf break with a major French city, the Mediterranean coast and plenty of sightseeing close by.

Designed by Californian architect Ronald Fream and opened in 1988, the main course is an 18-hole, par-72 layout measuring approximately 6,350 metres from the back tees. Fream designed the course to work naturally with the existing landscape, using mature trees, water and gentle changes in elevation rather than relying purely on length to provide the challenge.

The Cadoule River passes through the property, while lakes and other water hazards regularly influence the ideal line from the tee. There is room to use the driver on several holes, but this is a course where we would prioritise position over outright distance. Finding the correct side of the fairway can open up the green, while an ambitious shot that drifts offline can quickly bring water, trees or bunkering into play.

The tree-lined sections give Massane a mature parkland feel, while more open holes allow the Mediterranean breeze to become another factor. Greens are well defended and can be quick when conditions allow, so a good approach is about more than simply finding the putting surface. Leaving yourself on the correct section can make a considerable difference to the difficulty of the putt that follows.

Alongside the championship course is a nine-hole compact course, which is ideal for beginners, golfers looking to work on their short game or anyone wanting to squeeze in a little extra golf during their stay.

Practice facilities are another strong point. The two-level driving range has 24 hitting positions and TrackMan Range technology, allowing you to work accurately on distances and ball flight before heading onto the course. Additional short-game and putting facilities make Massane a particularly useful venue if improving your game is part of the holiday.
