Golf du Château de Chailly is a wonderfully characterful parkland course in the heart of Burgundy, combining strategic golf with the peaceful surroundings of a historic French château estate. Set near Chailly-sur-Armançon, the course winds through mature woodland and open countryside, making it a great addition to a golf holiday that also leaves plenty of time for Burgundy’s famous vineyards, villages and food.

Designed by Géry Watine and Thierry Sprecher, the 18-hole, par-73 course measures 6,160 metres and has a slope rating of 140 from the back tees. Although many of the tee shots initially look inviting, the real challenge begins as you approach the greens. This is a course where good positioning and accurate iron play can make a huge difference to the scorecard.

The greens are generally raised and protected by deep greenside bunkers, so missing on the wrong side can leave a difficult recovery. A natural stream also winds quietly through the course, introducing water hazards without dominating the landscape. We particularly like this balance because the course continually asks questions without feeling artificially difficult.

Mature trees give individual holes plenty of definition, while the changing colours of the Burgundy countryside make this an especially attractive course throughout the golfing season. There are opportunities to use the driver, but we would prioritise finding the fairway and leaving the correct angle into the green rather than simply chasing maximum distance.

The practice facilities are excellent for golfers who want to spend some additional time working on their game. There are 12 covered driving-range positions, a grass practice area, chipping green with a practice bunker and a dedicated putting green. Golf tuition is also available, with TrackMan technology used during lessons and club-fitting sessions.
