Golf du Gouverneur
Monthieux
Golf du Gouverneur offers 45 holes in the lake country of the Dombes, approximately 30 minutes from Lyon and 41km by road from Lyon Airport. Rather than squeezing several loops into a compact resort, the estate spreads across roughly 300 hectares of protected countryside. Water, mature vegetation and abundant wildlife shape the atmosphere, while two complementary 18-hole courses give visiting groups enough variety for a multi-round stay.
Le Breuil is the stronger championship test. Ponds border or influence many holes, so position from the tee matters and a cautious route is often more productive than an ambitious carry. The layout asks golfers to judge risk repeatedly, particularly when the safest side of a fairway leaves a less inviting approach. Its scale and challenge suit confident players, but sensible tee selection allows mixed-handicap groups to enjoy the course without every water hazard becoming compulsory.
Montaplan is shorter and more technical. Accuracy, angle and distance control take priority over power, making it an effective contrast to Le Breuil and a good second round for a weekend break. Players who keep the ball in position can create scoring chances, while those who attack without a plan may find the lakes and natural contours quickly add shots. The nine-hole La Soche course completes the venue and can be useful for a warm-up, extra holes or golfers who prefer a less demanding outing.
The practice set-up is unusually comprehensive for a rural resort. Golfers can use a water driving range with covered, outdoor and grass positions, alongside chipping space, two putting greens and dedicated practice holes with access subject to the club’s current rules. Tuition and the pro shop help groups arrange coaching, equipment or a purposeful session before playing.
After the round, the clubhouse provides an easy meeting point, while La Table du Gouverneur looks towards the putting green and terrace. The adjoining four-star hotel has 53 rooms and suites, a summer heated pool, fitness facilities, tennis and padel, so there is little need to travel once the group has checked in.
The combination works best for golfers who enjoy thoughtful parkland golf, natural surroundings and the convenience of several rounds in one place. It can also sit within a broader Lyon itinerary, adding city dining or sightseeing without sacrificing the quiet character of the golf stay. We can package the on-site accommodation with Le Breuil, Montaplan and, where appropriate, La Soche to create a balanced break for your group.
