Golf De Chiberta
Biarritz
Golf de Chiberta offers one of the French Basque Country’s most distinctive rounds, combining Atlantic links golf with peaceful, tree-lined parkland. Located in Anglet between Biarritz and Bayonne, the course stretches from the pine forest towards the seafront, giving golfers two very different playing environments within the same 18 holes.
Designed by renowned architect Tom Simpson and opened in 1927, the main Chiberta course measures approximately 5,600 metres and plays to a par of 70. It is not exceptionally long, but length is far from the only challenge. Sandy ground, natural hollows, strategic bunkering and changing coastal winds reward golfers who control their ball flight and think carefully about positioning from the tee. The course reaches the ocean as early as the second green before eventually moving inland through mature pine woodland.
The contrast between exposed seaside holes and tighter forest sections keeps the round varied from start to finish. Visiting golfers frequently praise the coastal scenery, firm playing surfaces, course conditioning and reliable greens. Its sandy base also drains well, helping Chiberta remain playable throughout the year, although the Atlantic breeze can quickly turn this relatively compact layout into a much tougher test.
Golfers can also play the club’s nine-hole L’Impératrice course. Opened in 2002, this flatter and shorter layout is suitable for beginners and practice rounds, yet remains technical enough to entertain more experienced players. The club also provides practice facilities, a restaurant and bar.
Golf de Chiberta is ideal for a wider Biarritz golf holiday, with Biarritz Le Phare, Golf d’Arcangues and Makila Golf Club all within easy reach. Away from the fairways, visitors can enjoy Anglet’s beaches, the restaurants and nightlife of Biarritz, or the historic streets and food markets of Bayonne. This combination of classic course architecture, Atlantic scenery and Basque culture makes Chiberta an excellent choice for couples and golf groups seeking more than golf alone.
