Golf at Formby Hall offers a complete 27-hole golf experience on England’s Golf Coast, combining a full-length championship parkland course with the nine-hole Woodhey Dunes par-three layout. Positioned between Liverpool and Southport, the resort is particularly well suited to stay-and-play breaks and can also be combined with famous nearby courses such as Royal Birkdale and Hillside.
The main Old Course is an 18-hole, par-72 championship layout measuring 7,010 yards from the back tees. Despite the relatively flat terrain, this is far from straightforward golf. Mature woodland frames many of the fairways, while strategically positioned bunkers and water hazards regularly influence tee shots and approaches. USGA-specification greens add another layer to the challenge, rewarding accurate iron play and sensible course management. Multiple tees reduce the course to around 5,200 yards at its shortest, making it accessible to a broad range of handicaps.
The course has hosted professional tournaments including events on the European Seniors Tour, Challenge Tour and EuroPro Tour. One of its best-known holes is the 16th, where local golfer Tommy Fleetwood recorded his first hole-in-one. Excellent drainage also helps the parkland course provide reliable playing conditions throughout much of the year.
For extra golf, Woodhey Dunes is a nine-hole, par-three links-style course measuring 1,395 yards from the white tees. Riveted pot bunkers, undulating greens, water and the coastal breeze create a surprisingly testing short-course experience. Its signature 2nd features an island green, while the whole round can usually be completed in around an hour.
Practice facilities are particularly strong. Formby Hall is a recognised PGA Academy venue, with a 16-bay Toptracer driving range, putting facilities, dedicated short-game areas, PGA coaching and the Tommy Fleetwood Academy. Golfers also have access to the Pro Shop, equipment services and on-site clubhouse dining.
We recommend Formby Hall for societies and mixed-handicap groups wanting championship golf, excellent practice facilities and accommodation on the doorstep, while still having easy access to the outstanding links courses of the Southport area.
