Great Northern is one of Denmark’s most impressive modern golf experiences, combining a championship layout with the natural landscapes of Funen. Located near Kerteminde, the course has been designed to make full use of the area’s rolling terrain, lakes and coastal wind, creating a round that can feel completely different depending on the conditions.

The 18-hole, par-72 championship course was created by Nicklaus Design, making Great Northern the first golf course in Denmark designed by the renowned American architectural company. From the back tees it stretches to approximately 6,775 metres, although multiple tee positions make the course far more accessible for golfers of different abilities.

What we particularly like about Great Northern is how strategic the course feels. Large sculpted bunkers, carefully positioned lakes and precisely shaped greens constantly make you think about the best angle rather than simply hitting the ball as far as possible. The fairways can look inviting from the tee, but finding the correct side often makes the following approach considerably easier.

The wind is another major part of the experience. Nicklaus Design deliberately incorporated Funen’s changing conditions into the layout, so a hole that feels straightforward on a calm morning can become a completely different challenge once the breeze arrives. That variety is exactly what we look for in a course that you might want to play more than once during a stay.

There are several standout holes. The 3rd offers one of the best views on the property, with panoramas towards the Great Belt, northern Kerteminde and Odense Fjord. The 9th is a demanding par 3 where water stays in play throughout, while the 18th provides a memorable finish with its island-style green positioned in front of the clubhouse.

Alongside the championship course is a nine-hole Academy Course, ideal for an additional round or golfers looking for something shorter.
