Esbjerg Golfklub is a fantastic addition to a golf holiday in western Denmark, offering two contrasting 18-hole courses in the natural surroundings of the Wadden Sea National Park. Located just outside Esbjerg, the club combines mature woodland, exposed heathland and the influence of the North Sea wind to create a proper Danish golf experience with plenty of variety over several rounds.
The headline layout is the Marbæk Course, designed by Frederik Dreyer and opened in 1975. Set across approximately 70 hectares of Marbæk Plantation, it has an established feel with mature trees, heathland and large, heavily contoured greens. From the back tees the par-71 layout measures 6,357 metres, providing a strong championship test.
What we particularly like about Marbæk is the influence of the nearby coast. The relatively open landscape leaves the course exposed to strong westerly winds, so judging trajectory and club selection can become every bit as important as distance. It is the sort of course that can feel completely different from one day to the next depending on the conditions.
Marbæk also has plenty of tournament history. The course has hosted European Challenge Tour golf on several occasions, including events in 1995, 2004 and 2005, before staging two consecutive Challenge Tour tournaments during the club’s centenary celebrations in 2021.
Alongside Marbæk is the Myrtue Course, giving golfers another full 18 holes without leaving the club. The original nine was also designed by Frederik Dreyer before Henrik Jacobsen completed its expansion to 18 holes in 2007. Myrtue provides a slightly different test and is ideal for an additional round during a longer stay.
Practice facilities are excellent, with a TrackMan Range and several dedicated pitching and short-game areas, including practice bunkers and undulating greens designed to recreate the challenges found out on the courses.

Esbjerg is a brilliant choice for a Denmark golf holiday, especially for golfers who want a mix of quality golf, coastal scenery and easy access to the Wadden Sea. Sitting on Denmark’s west coast, it has a different feel from the country’s bigger city breaks: more open skies, sea air, harbour life and peaceful countryside.
For golf, the standout is Esbjerg Golf Club, where you can play two 18-hole courses: the championship Marbæk by NorSea Course and the newer Myrtue Course. Marbæk was named Denmark’s Best Golf Course at the 2019 World Golf Awards, which makes Esbjerg a strong option for golfers looking for a memorable Danish golf break rather than just a convenient round.
Away from the course, Esbjerg is excellent for fresh-air days. We would recommend visiting the giant Man Meets the Sea sculpture, walking by the waterfront, heading to Hjerting Beach, or spending time at the Fisheries and Maritime Museum, where you can explore Denmark’s maritime story, aquariums and seal exhibits.
For a longer stay, take the 12-minute ferry to Fanø for beaches, dunes and Wadden Sea scenery. Esbjerg Airport is around 15 minutes from the city centre, while Billund Airport is also a practical option for UK travellers.
