Club Militar de Golf

Sopó

average rating is 4 out of 5

Club Militar de Golf is an 18-hole country club course in Sopó, around 30 kilometres north of Bogotá. Set high on the Bogotá savanna, the course combines mature woodland, ornamental lakes and views towards the surrounding Andean hills. Its address on the Autopista Norte makes it a convenient addition to a golf holiday based in Colombia’s capital.

Founded in 1977, the course was designed by Canadian architect Howard Watson. The par-72 layout measures approximately 6,700 yards from the longest tees and uses two returning loops of nine holes. Although the terrain is mostly flat, natural undulations, numerous bunkers and nine lakes create plenty of strategic interest throughout the round.

The opening nine provides relatively generous landing areas, giving golfers room to settle into their round. The back nine becomes tighter and more technical, with mature pine and eucalyptus trees placing greater pressure on driving accuracy. Water influences several holes, while around 76 bunkers protect landing areas and greens across the course.

One of the most memorable challenges is the par-three 16th, known as The Island. Its green sits within a lake, demanding a confident carry over water with little room for error. It is the sort of hole that can produce a brilliant birdie, a nervous bogey or a sudden need to rummage around for another golf ball.

Club Militar sits at approximately 2,550 metres above sea level. The thinner air allows well-struck shots to travel farther than they would at sea level, so visiting golfers may need to use less club than normal. Cooler mountain conditions, changing breezes and the course’s water-protected greens still make accurate distance control important.

Practice facilities include a driving range, putting green, chipping area and a six-hole junior course. Golf carts and caddies are available, while the clubhouse has dining and social spaces for relaxing after a round. The wider club also provides tennis, horse riding, a gym, football, children’s facilities, a spa, sauna and event areas.

At Hashtag Golf Travel, we recommend Club Militar de Golf for golfers looking for a traditional parkland course with water, mature trees and an enjoyable high-altitude twist. The club is primarily operated for members of Colombia’s armed forces, police, civilian members and their guests, so visitor access and tee times should be arranged before travelling.

About The Area

Sopó is one of the strongest bases for a golf holiday on the Bogotá Savannah, combining several high-quality courses with cool Andean scenery and peaceful countryside. Located north-east of Bogotá, the municipality feels far removed from the capital’s busiest districts while remaining within reach of its restaurants and attractions. El Dorado International Airport is approximately 47–50 kilometres away by road, although traffic can make transfer times unpredictable. We recommend arranging private transport when travelling with golf clubs.

The leading local venue is Hatogrande Golf & Tennis Country Club. Its main 18-hole, par-72 course provides a scenic high-altitude challenge, supported by a shorter nine-hole, par-30 course for beginners and practice rounds. Water, bunkering and the surrounding hills shape an attractive layout where thoughtful positioning is often more useful than pure distance.

Briceño 18 is another excellent option nearby. The 18-hole, par-72 course can stretch beyond 7,300 yards from its longest tees and is supported by a 400-yard driving range, pitch-and-putt areas, professional coaching and a golf school. It offers one of the more accessible additions to a Bogotá Savannah golf itinerary.

Golfers staying longer can also consider Aposentos Golf Club or La Pradera de Potosí, whose dramatic course features broad fairways, undulating greens, extensive bunkering and 16 artificial lakes. Many clubs around Sopó are membership-based, so guest access, tee times, caddies, handicap documents and equipment hire should be confirmed before travelling.

Away from golf, Pionono Ecological Park is our recommended local excursion. Its walking trails and viewpoints reveal the forests, farmland and mountain landscapes surrounding Sopó. The area is also popular for cycling, birdwatching and traditional food, including warm corn arepas and locally produced dairy treats.

Sopó works particularly well as part of a tailor-made Bogotá golf holiday, offering several contrasting rounds, fresh mountain air and a quieter base outside the capital.
