La Calera
Club de Golf La Cima is a dramatic mountain course in La Calera, high in the Eastern Andes above Bogotá. Sitting at approximately 3,000 metres above sea level, it is Colombia’s highest golf course and one of the highest courses anywhere in the world. The elevated setting provides far-reaching mountain views, cool conditions and a round unlike anything golfers normally experience at sea level.
Designed by Colombian architect Boris Sokoloff and opened in 1990, the 18-hole course plays to a par of 70 and measures 6,074 yards from the longest tees. That may appear short on the scorecard, but steep hills, narrow landing areas, blind shots and major changes in elevation make La Cima a demanding test. Fairways follow the existing ridges and valleys, while several greens sit on natural shelves above or below the golfer.
Altitude has a huge influence on how the course plays. The thinner air can add around 15% to a well-struck shot, so golfers must quickly rethink their usual club selection. A club that normally produces the correct distance at home can easily send the ball beyond a green here. Mountain breezes, cool air and occasional mist add further uncertainty, making distance judgement one of the most interesting parts of the experience.
La Cima rewards accuracy and patient course management more than raw power. Tight fairways and doglegs encourage golfers to leave the driver in the bag on several holes, while steep slopes can carry an inaccurate ball well away from the intended target. Approaches are particularly demanding, with raised greens, sharp run-off areas and uneven lies regularly coming into play. The course is also physically challenging to walk, especially for visitors who have not yet adjusted to the altitude.
The Colombian Golf Federation lists La Cima as a public course, meaning golfers can play without purchasing a traditional country-club membership. Practice facilities include a driving range and putting green, with golf lessons, caddie services and rental clubs also available. Visiting arrangements and equipment should be confirmed before travelling, particularly for international golfers.
