Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club

Whistler

average rating is 4 out of 5

Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club delivers exactly what we want from a Canadian mountain golf experience: dramatic scenery, memorable elevation changes and a course that feels completely connected to its surroundings. Set on the lower slopes of Blackcomb Mountain in Whistler, British Columbia, this is a course where the views are every bit as impressive as the golf.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 1993, the 18-hole, par-72 layout stretches to 6,635 yards from the back tees. The course climbs and falls by more than 400 feet across the round, creating elevated tees, sweeping views and plenty of shots where judging the change in height is just as important as choosing the right club.

What we particularly like is how naturally the course sits within the mountain landscape. Fairways weave between stands of Douglas fir, granite rock formations, ponds and mountain creeks, while the surrounding peaks provide a spectacular backdrop throughout the round. Wildlife is also part of the experience here, adding another reminder that you are playing golf in the Canadian wilderness rather than on a conventional resort layout.

The course is challenging, but it has been designed so golfers of different abilities can enjoy it. Several teeing options allow you to choose a sensible distance, which is important on a course where elevation and positioning can make holes play very differently from the number shown on the scorecard. From the back tees there is plenty to test stronger players, with strategic bunkering, water hazards and demanding approaches putting a premium on good course management.

One of the most enjoyable aspects for us is the variety. The front nine plays to a par of 37 and includes three par 5s, while the back nine starts with a short par 3 before working through a mixture of strategic par 4s and dramatic finishing holes. The par-5 18th provides a fitting finish before arriving beside The Clubhouse.

Practice facilities include a driving range and putting green, with access included before your round. Golf instruction and clinics are also available for anyone wanting to work on their game while in Whistler.

After golf, The Clubhouse overlooking the 18th is exactly where we would head. Its patio is a brilliant place to sit with a drink, enjoy something to eat and take in the mountain scenery while watching the final groups finish.

With Fairmont Chateau Whistler nearby and the restaurants, bars and activities of Whistler within easy reach, the course works perfectly as part of a longer Canadian golf holiday. About The Area

Coquitlam is a smart base for golfers who want a Vancouver-area golf holiday with mountain scenery, easy city access and plenty of outdoor appeal. Set east of downtown Vancouver, it gives you a more relaxed West Coast feel while still keeping restaurants, shopping, waterfront areas and city attractions within easy reach. Tourism Coquitlam sums up the area well, with urban neighbourhoods, food spots, parks, shopping and hiking all sitting close together.

The main golfing highlight is GreenTee Country Club Westwood Plateau, set high on Eagle Mountain above Coquitlam. Its Sky Course is an 18-hole championship layout designed by Michael Hurdzan, playing through Douglas firs, granite rock faces and rugged ravines, with panoramic mountain views and a strong resort-style feel. The club also has an executive course, driving range, simulators and practice facilities, making it a flexible choice for different golfing groups.

For a quicker round or short-game session, Eaglequest Coquitlam adds a 9-hole par-27 course with grass tees, large greens and an 80-minute playing time, which is ideal if you want a lighter golf day before exploring more of the city.

Away from golf, Coquitlam is great for active travellers. Town Centre Park and Lafarge Lake offer easy lakeside walks, while Mundy Park has 16 km of forest trails in a temperate rainforest setting.

For UK golfers, Coquitlam works beautifully as part of a tailor-made British Columbia golf holiday, especially when combined with Vancouver, Whistler, Furry Creek or Pemberton. Hashtag Golf Travel can help plan the right courses, hotels and route.
