Lighthouse Golf Club is an 18-hole championship layout near Balchik on Bulgaria’s northern Black Sea coast. Set within the Lighthouse Golf & Spa Resort, the course combines open coastal scenery, gently rolling fairways, lakes and carefully shaped bunkers. Its position within the Cape Kaliakra Signature Golf Coast also places golfers close to BlackSeaRama and Thracian Cliffs, creating one of Eastern Europe’s strongest golf-holiday regions.

Designed by former Masters champion and Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam in association with European Golf Design, the course opened in 2008. It plays to a par of 71 and measures 6,338 metres from its longest tees. Several shorter teeing options help make the layout suitable for different handicaps, while the back markers provide a proper championship test.

Lighthouse has a links-inspired character, although its maintained fairways, water features and resort landscaping give it a more forgiving appearance than a traditional seaside links. The ground is only gently undulating, but the exposed setting allows the Black Sea breeze to affect ball flight, club selection and the difficulty of individual holes. A comfortable drive in calm weather can become considerably more demanding when played into the wind.

Five lakes covering a combined area of around 33,000 square metres form an important part of the course’s strategy. Water influences drives and approaches, while fairway bunkers encourage golfers to choose their landing areas carefully. The fairways provide reasonable room in places, but finding the correct side can create a much clearer route towards the green.

The par-four fourth presents an early risk-and-reward decision, allowing golfers to challenge the water from the tee or take a safer route along the fairway. The ninth is rated as the hardest hole on the course and demands a well-positioned drive before a testing approach. These strategic choices ensure the layout remains interesting without becoming unnecessarily punishing for holiday golfers.

The 151-metre par-three 17th is one of the course’s standout short holes. Water protects the front-right section of the green, placing extra pressure on club selection when the wind is moving across the course. The final hole is a 424-metre par four and the longest par four on the layout, with fairway bunkers and a strongly defended green creating a demanding finish.

Lighthouse strengthened its tournament reputation when it hosted the European Tour Properties Senior Classic in 2018. The event marked the course’s tenth anniversary and brought leading senior professionals to Bulgaria, with Magnus Persson Atlevi winning the main competition.

Practice facilities include a 300-metre driving range, short-game areas and a golf academy. Visitors can also use rental clubs, manual or electric trolleys, golf buggies, changing rooms, bag-drop and cleaning services. A buggy bar and halfway house provide refreshments during the round.

The five-star Lighthouse Golf & Spa Hotel sits within the resort, making stay-and-play arrangements particularly straightforward. Golfers have access to restaurants, bars, swimming pools, a spa and wellness centre and additional sports facilities. The neighbouring BlackSeaRama course can also be reached easily, while Thracian Cliffs is close enough for a short road transfer.
