Bryn Meadows Golf Club

Ystrad Mynach

average rating is 4 out of 5

Bryn Meadows Golf Club is a mature parkland course surrounded by the rolling countryside and valleys of South Wales. Established in 1973 and designed by Brian Mayo and Craig Defoy, it provides a varied test where accuracy and careful course management are generally more valuable than sheer distance.

The 18-hole championship course measures 6,021 yards and plays to a par of 71. Tree-lined fairways, streams, changes in elevation and strategically positioned hazards ensure that no two holes feel alike. Its manageable overall length makes Bryn Meadows accessible to mixed-handicap groups, but golfers who stray from the preferred lines can quickly find themselves facing difficult recovery shots.

Two holes capture the challenge particularly well. The 557-yard par-five 2nd brings out of bounds into the strategy and asks players to position each shot sensibly. Later, the 227-yard par-three 13th demands a committed carry across water, making club selection especially important when the wind is moving through the valley.

Visitors can also use a nine-hole Academy Course, which provides a welcoming introduction for beginners and younger golfers. PGA lessons and a virtual golf simulator are available, while buggies, pull trolleys and equipment can be hired. After the round, the refurbished Winners Bar overlooks the 10th and 11th fairways.

Bryn Meadows is part of an independent four-star golf and spa resort, so golfers can stay within the same 100-acre estate. Its 42 rooms, Blas Restaurant, indoor swimming pool, gym, jacuzzi, sauna and Fusion Spa make the venue particularly suitable for couples and mixed groups. Cardiff is approximately 25 minutes away, adding convenient access to the Welsh capital’s restaurants, nightlife and attractions.
