St. Pierre Country Club
Chepstow
Set within 400 acres of beautiful Welsh parkland near the historic town of Chepstow, St. Pierre Country Club offers one of South Wales' most established championship golfing experiences. Surrounded by mature woodland, picturesque lakes and rolling countryside, this impressive golf destination is home to two contrasting 18-hole courses, combining challenging fairways, rich tournament history and stunning scenery. Located close to the beautiful Wye Valley and within easy reach of Bristol and Cardiff, it's a fantastic choice for a memorable golf holiday in Wales.
The Championship Old Course is the club's flagship layout and one of Wales' most celebrated parkland courses. Originally designed by C.K. Cotton and opened in 1962, this par-72 championship layout stretches an impressive 7,028 yards from the back tees. Extensively remodelled by Ross McMurray in 2008, the course features tree-lined fairways, strategically positioned bunkers, challenging water hazards and beautifully contoured greens. Having hosted numerous prestigious tournaments, including the 1996 Solheim Cup and several editions of the British Masters, the Old Course offers golfers the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of some of the game's greatest players.
One of the most memorable challenges comes at the spectacular par-three 18th, where golfers must negotiate the edge of an 11-acre lake before reaching a raised green. Measuring up to 235 yards from the championship tees, this dramatic finishing hole demands accuracy, confidence and careful club selection, providing a fitting conclusion to a challenging championship round.
For a contrasting experience, the Mathern Course offers an enjoyable 18-hole, par-68 layout measuring 5,730 yards. Also remodelled by Ross McMurray in 2008, this picturesque parkland course winds through beautiful meadows, mature trees and gently rolling countryside. Although shorter than the Old Course, Mathern provides plenty of interesting challenges, particularly at the signature par-four 14th, where golfers must navigate two stretches of water on their way to the green. Its welcoming layout makes it particularly appealing for mixed-ability golf groups and relaxed additional rounds.
Away from the fairways, golfers can take advantage of excellent practice facilities, including a 12-bay floodlit golf academy, grass driving range, putting greens, chipping areas and practice bunkers. PGA professional coaching, a well-stocked golf shop and equipment hire are also available, while the welcoming clubhouse provides the perfect place to enjoy a post-round drink.
The adjoining four-star Delta Hotels by Marriott St. Pierre Country Club offers comfortable accommodation, excellent dining and relaxing leisure facilities, making it an ideal destination for a stay-and-play golf break. The surrounding area is equally appealing, with Chepstow Castle, Tintern Abbey and the beautiful Wye Valley offering plenty to discover between rounds.
At Hashtag Golf Travel, we highly recommend St. Pierre Country Club for couples, golf societies and groups seeking a memorable championship golf holiday in South Wales. With two contrasting parkland courses, impressive Solheim Cup history and excellent on-site accommodation, it's a fantastic choice for combining enjoyable golf with Welsh countryside scenery and traditional hospitality.
