Real Club de Golf De Las Palmas
Las Palmas
Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas offers a historic and highly distinctive round beside the spectacular Caldera de Bandama in north-east Gran Canaria. Founded in 1891, it is recognised as the oldest golf club in Spain, giving golfers the chance to play somewhere with genuine heritage as well as an unforgettable volcanic setting.
The club moved to its present location in the 1950s, where the 18-hole, par-71 course was designed by Scottish architect Mackenzie Ross. Positioned beside the rim of an ancient volcanic crater, the layout provides impressive views across the island’s mountains, deep ravines and distant coastline.
Although relatively short by modern standards, the course should not be underestimated. Narrow fairways, small greens, substantial bunkers and steep gullies place a premium on accuracy and careful course management. Golfers who chase distance without considering position can quickly find themselves facing a difficult recovery, while controlled tee shots and precise approaches are regularly rewarded.
The elevated setting and changing breeze can also affect club selection, particularly when playing across the course’s exposed sections. Its manageable length makes it suitable for mixed-handicap groups, but the narrow targets and natural hazards ensure experienced golfers still have plenty to think about. Practice facilities are available for those wanting to warm up or work on their game before the round.
After golf, visitors can explore the Caldera de Bandama and enjoy panoramic views from Pico de Bandama. Nearby Santa Brígida is known for its traditional architecture, weekend market and locally produced food, while the surrounding volcanic soils support several vineyards and wineries. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is also within easy reach, offering the historic streets of Vegueta, excellent restaurants and the golden sands of Las Canteras Beach.
For golfers looking for year-round golf, volcanic scenery and the opportunity to play at Spain’s oldest golf club, Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas is a fascinating addition to a Gran Canaria golf holiday.
