Kungliga Drottningholms Golfklubb

Drottningholm

average rating is 4 out of 5

Kungliga Drottningholms Golfklubb is one of Sweden’s most historic and distinctive golf clubs, set on royal land beside Drottningholm Palace, just outside Stockholm. The club was inaugurated in 1959 by King Gustaf VI Adolf and remains the only golf club in Sweden with a royal warrant, giving it a sense of heritage that feels genuinely different from a standard golf break.

The 18-hole course has a parkland character, mixing open landscape with forested areas and beautiful natural surroundings. Visit Stockholm describes it as sitting “a stone’s throw” from Drottningholm Palace, with free-play available to non-members, which makes it a strong addition to a Sweden golf holiday itinerary.

Designed originally by Rafael Sundblom and Nils Sköld, the course was later renovated by Johan Benestam, with redesigned bunkering and green complexes to suit the modern game. The result is a thoughtful course where careful driving, smart angles and a tidy short game all matter.

For a golf holiday in Stockholm, Kungliga Drottningholm works brilliantly as a refined, heritage-rich round close to the city. Golfers can combine it with other excellent courses in the Stockholm region, while also enjoying the capital’s waterfront, restaurants, culture and easy flight access. Hashtag Golf Travel can help shape it into a smooth Sweden golf break with the right hotels, transfers and tee times planned properly.

About The Area

Drottningholm is one of the most distinctive places to play golf near Stockholm, combining royal history, peaceful island scenery and easy access to Sweden’s capital. Set on Lovön beside Lake Mälaren, it is best known for Drottningholm Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sweden’s best-preserved 17th-century royal residences. That gives any golf break here a lovely sense of occasion before you have even stepped onto the first tee.

The main draw for golfers is Royal Drottningholm Golf Club, located close to the palace. The course has a parkland feel, mixing open stretches with wooded areas, and has genuine tournament pedigree, including hosting the first Volvo Open in 1970. It also accepts visiting golfers, which makes it a strong addition to a Stockholm golf holiday itinerary.

Drottningholm works particularly well for golfers who want culture and city life alongside their rounds. You can explore the palace gardens, take a boat trip across Lake Mälaren, or head into Stockholm for waterfront restaurants, museums, shopping and nightlife. For a fuller golf itinerary, nearby Stockholm-area courses such as Ullna Golf Club and Bro Hof Slott can add extra quality and variety, creating a trip with real depth.

For UK golfers, Drottningholm is ideal as part of a tailor-made Sweden golf break, especially if you want a destination that feels elegant, relaxed and easy to combine with a city stay. Hashtag Golf Travel can help plan the right courses, hotels and travel route.
