Empordà Golf Club offers 36 holes with two deliberately contrasting personalities in the countryside near Gualta. Empordà Dunes is open, exposed and shaped by sand and water, while Empordà Forest moves through mature pines in a more sheltered Mediterranean landscape. Robert von Hagge created the original vision, with Rick Baril also credited by the club, and the pair of courses now gives golfers enough variety for consecutive rounds without the feeling of replaying the same terrain.

The Dunes course is an 18-hole par 71 measuring 6,328 metres from its longest tees. Wide, fast and subtly undulating greens sit among lakes, dunes and strategically placed bunkers. The treeless setting recalls aspects of British links golf, although it remains an inland Costa Brava layout. Wind can transform club selection and landing areas, and the strongest play is often to favour position over distance. Water and sand frame many decisions, while the open views make the hazards easy to see but not necessarily easy to avoid.

Forest provides the visual counterpoint. Its holes are enclosed by umbrella pines, with fairways more protected from the characteristic Empordà breeze. The quieter setting feels intimate, and players must shape shots through woodland corridors and judge approaches into greens surrounded by natural vegetation. It rewards accuracy and patience in a different way from Dunes, so a two-round package reveals the full quality of the venue.

Practice facilities are extensive. The Golf Lab supports tuition and swing analysis, with TrackMan technology, bunker and approach areas, professional coaching and a 2,000-square-metre putting green. A second putting green beside the first tees is useful for warming up immediately before a round. GPS buggies, manual and electric trolleys, rental clubs, changing rooms, lockers and a pro shop help travelling golfers organise equipment around the trip.

Entrecamps and Terrafonda provide post-round food at different points of the resort, although their opening schedules vary by season. Hotel Terraverda sits beside the courses but now has its own accommodation page, keeping room, pool and spa information away from the playing detail.

Empordà is an excellent anchor for a Girona golf holiday because the two courses can fill two days while Golf de Pals and other Costa Brava venues remain within reach. Dunes generally suits golfers who enjoy exposed strategic golf; Forest appeals to those who prefer tree-lined definition. Most groups benefit from playing both.
