Dehesa Montenmedio Golf & Country Club

Cádiz

average rating is 4 out of 5

Dehesa Montenmedio Golf & Country Club offers a wonderfully natural round in the unspoilt countryside of Cádiz, close to the hilltop town of Vejer de la Frontera. With no housing or large resort developments surrounding the fairways, golfers can enjoy peaceful views across cork oaks, wild olive trees and Mediterranean pines, with the Atlantic and even the coast of North Africa visible on clear days.

Designed by Alejandro Maldonado and opened in 1996, the 18-hole, par-72 course measures approximately 6,260 metres from the back tees. It follows the gently rolling landscape of the traditional Andalusian dehesa, creating a scenic parkland test where the natural terrain plays an important role in every round.

The fairways are generally wide enough to provide confidence from the tee, but numerous bunkers, water hazards and well-defended greens ensure accurate positioning remains essential. Several holes feature doglegs where the best route is not always the most direct, rewarding golfers who choose the correct club and leave themselves a clear angle into the green. The long par-five 12th is one of the standout holes, demanding three carefully planned shots across its 550-metre length.

Montenmedio is suitable for a wide range of handicaps, although its changes in elevation, lengthy par fives and strategic hazards provide plenty of challenge for experienced players. Deer, rabbits and birdlife are regularly seen around the course, adding to the feeling of playing in a genuine nature reserve rather than a conventional golf development.

Practice facilities include a driving range and putting area, while the Andalusian-style clubhouse provides a relaxed setting for food and drinks after the round.

Away from golf, visitors can explore Vejer de la Frontera’s whitewashed streets, Moorish architecture and excellent restaurants. The beaches at El Palmar, Barbate and Zahara de los Atunes are also nearby, offering surfing, coastal walks and superb seafood beside the Atlantic.

About The Area

Arcos de la Frontera is one of Andalusia’s most dramatic white villages, perched high above the Guadalete River and offering golfers a scenic inland base within reach of the Costa de la Luz. With its cliff-top views, Moorish history and relaxed pace of life, it provides a culturally rich alternative to Spain’s busier coastal resorts.

The town’s standout venue is Arcos Gardens Golf Club, a championship layout set within rolling countryside just outside the historic centre. Designed by Landmark Golf, the course features wide fairways, natural elevation changes and water hazards that come into play on several approach shots. It’s playable for mixed-ability groups but rewards thoughtful positioning and a strong short game. Within an hour’s drive, Montecastillo Golf — a former Volvo Masters host venue — provides a sterner championship test, while Sherry Golf Jerez offers a more forgiving, open layout ideal for relaxed rounds.

Golf in this region benefits from Andalusia’s warm, dry climate, with firm fairways and consistent greens throughout much of the year. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) provide the most comfortable playing conditions, avoiding the intense heat of midsummer.

Off the course, Arcos itself is a highlight. Its narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed houses and panoramic viewpoints create one of Spain’s most photogenic settings. Traditional tapas bars and Andalusian cuisine dominate the evenings, while nearby Jerez offers sherry bodegas and flamenco performances. The Atlantic beaches of Cádiz are also within reach for rest-day excursions.

For golfers seeking scenic inland courses, authentic Spanish character and access to Andalusia’s cultural heartland, Arcos de la Frontera delivers a uniquely atmospheric and rewarding golf escape.
