Valle del Este Golf is a distinctive desert-style course in Vera, within the sun-soaked province of Almería. Bright green fairways stand out against golden hills, exposed rock and native semi-desert vegetation, creating scenery rarely found at European golf resorts. Its peaceful inland position is still within easy reach of Vera’s beaches, Mojácar and the Mediterranean coastline.

Designed by José Canales Gálvez, the course opened in 2002 and follows the natural shape of the valley rather than trying to hide its rugged surroundings. The 18-hole, par-71 layout measures approximately 5,693 metres in its current main configuration, with different teeing positions allowing holiday golfers to choose a comfortable challenge.

Valle del Este provides an entertaining mixture of broad driving areas, elevated tees, doglegs, rocky barrancas and water hazards. Many landing zones can be seen clearly from the tee, but finding the correct side of the fairway is important. A drive placed in the right position creates a much simpler approach, while an inaccurate shot can leave sand, water or desert ground between the ball and the green.

The course is especially memorable for the contrast between its maintained playing areas and the surrounding pre-desert landscape. Golfers may move from a lush, palm-framed hole to a much more open section shaped by rocks and dry riverbeds. Elevated tees add visual drama, but they can also make distance judgement difficult when the breeze begins to move across the valley.

Holes 11 to 13 form the course’s best-known stretch. The short 12th plays across the dry bed of the River Nuno towards a raised green protected by bunkers. It is not an especially long par three, but the carry, elevation and exposed target make accuracy far more important than power.

The large greens offer numerous flag positions and can create long, difficult putts after an approach finishes on the wrong level. Bunkers are often broad and visually intimidating, while water provides another challenge on selected holes. The layout therefore suits golfers who enjoy making decisions rather than simply reaching for the driver at every opportunity.

Practice facilities include a driving range measuring more than 300 metres, which can be used from both ends. Golfers can practise from mats or seasonal natural-grass areas, while separate putting, chipping, approach and bunker facilities support short-game work. Seventeen Toptracer stations have also been installed, providing live shot information and interactive practice games.

The golf academy welcomes beginners and experienced players, while club fitting is available in partnership with TaylorMade. Visitors can hire buggies, electric trolleys and manual trolleys, and both nine-hole and 18-hole green fees are offered. The clubhouse includes a golf reception and the Restaurant & Pub Golf for food and drinks after the round.

Hotel Valle del Este sits directly within the course, with the first and 10th tees close to the building and the ninth and 18th greens beside it. This creates a very convenient stay-and-play experience, complemented by a spa, swimming pool, gym and additional dining facilities. The resort also uses reclaimed water across its grounds and states that its electricity comes from renewable sources.
