Zebula Golf Course

Mabula

average rating is 4 out of 5

Zebula Golf Course offers one of South Africa’s most distinctive bushveld golf experiences, combining championship golf with the wildlife and wide-open landscapes of the Waterberg region. Set within Zebula Golf Estate & Spa near Bela-Bela in Limpopo, the course winds through indigenous bush with views towards the Waterberg Mountains. For us, it is the sort of course that could only really exist in South Africa, with giraffe, zebra and other plains game sometimes sharing the surroundings while you play.

Designed by renowned South African architect Peter Matkovich, the 18-hole, par-72 course stretches to 6,829 metres from the back tees. Four main teeing options allow golfers to choose a distance that suits their game, which is important on a layout that can provide a serious challenge when played at its full length.

What we particularly like about Zebula is how naturally the course sits within the landscape. Matkovich followed the existing contours rather than trying to overpower the terrain, allowing indigenous bush, water and the movement of the land to shape the holes. The result is a proper bushveld course where the environment feels like part of the design rather than simply scenery around it.

There is plenty of room to use the driver, but good positioning remains important. Large bunkers, water hazards and well-protected greens continually ask you to think about where the next shot needs to come from. The combination of longer holes and strategic hazards means stronger golfers can attack when the opportunity appears, while choosing the appropriate tees keeps the experience enjoyable for higher handicappers.

The wildlife adds another dimension that is difficult to replicate elsewhere. Playing past giraffes or zebra in the surrounding bush is a very different experience from a conventional resort course and gives Zebula genuine character. The estate sits within a malaria-free part of the Waterberg, making it particularly appealing for golfers wanting to combine their rounds with a wider South African bush experience.

Practice facilities are excellent, including a large 18-hole putting green, chipping area with practice bunker, five-hole Mashie Course and a distance-marked driving range with five target greens. PGA professionals are also available for individual lessons and group clinics.

With accommodation, restaurants, spa facilities, game drives and other outdoor activities available across Zebula Golf Estate & Spa, it is easy to turn a round here into a complete stay-and-play experience.
