Golf at Fancourt
George
Golf at Fancourt is one of the great reasons to visit South Africa’s Garden Route. Set beneath the Outeniqua Mountains near George, the resort brings together three distinctive championship courses – Montagu, Outeniqua and The Links – alongside a nine-hole Links Experience and an excellent Golf Academy. For us, it is the sort of destination where golfers can comfortably stay for several nights without ever feeling they are simply repeating the same experience.
The Montagu Course provides classic championship parkland golf. Rolling fairways, mature trees, water and strategically positioned bunkers create a layout where good positioning is essential, while the firm, quick greens add another challenge around the flag. Montagu has a wonderfully established feel and is the course we would choose when you want a traditional parkland test surrounded by the scenery of the Garden Route. Manor House
Outeniqua offers a slightly more relaxed experience without becoming an easy round. Named after the mountains that dominate the skyline, the course moves through constantly changing terrain with water, trees and natural elevation influencing your strategy. We particularly like the contrast with Montagu – it remains proper championship golf, but there are more opportunities to play positively and enjoy the incredible mountain backdrop. Manor House
The flagship experience is The Links. Created with Gary Player and inspired by the classic links courses of the British Isles, it trades manicured parkland for rolling, dune-style terrain, dramatic bunkering and exposed conditions where the wind can completely change the way the course plays. Gary Player has described The Links as his greatest achievement as a golf course designer, and it provides an unforgettable contrast to the other Fancourt layouts. Access is more exclusive and tee times are limited, so this is one we would always recommend arranging well in advance.
There is also the nine-hole Links Experience, designed for golfers wanting a quicker but still challenging round, while The Academy at Fancourt offers PGA tuition, short-game practice, putting facilities and modern coaching technology.
With luxury accommodation, restaurants, spa facilities and the Outeniqua Mountains surrounding the estate, Fancourt is far more than somewhere to squeeze in a round or two. About The Area
Hockley offers a peaceful base for a golf holiday in the Greater Houston area, combining rural Texas scenery with access to several high-quality courses. Situated northwest of central Houston, the community feels far removed from the city’s busiest districts while still allowing visitors to add Houston’s restaurants, sporting venues and attractions to their itinerary. George Bush Intercontinental Airport is approximately 42 miles, or 68 kilometres, from Hockley, so hiring a car is strongly recommended.
The standout local venue is Houston Oaks Country Club & Retreat. Its golf facilities include an 18-hole championship course designed by Chet Williams and the nine-hole Scrambler Course, which winds through centuries-old oak trees and beside several lakes. The main course offers six sets of tees, helping golfers of different abilities enjoy its strategic bunkering, water hazards and gently undulating landscape. Houston Oaks is a private members’ club, however, so visitor access must be arranged through a member, authorised event or eligible stay rather than assumed when planning a package.
For more straightforward visitor golf, BlackHorse Golf Club in nearby Cypress is a strong option. The club has two 18-hole courses, with its North Course offering public tee-time opportunities while the South Course is primarily reserved for members. Houston National Golf Club provides another championship layout in northwest Houston, designed by Von Hagge, Smelek and Baril.
Away from golf, Hockley’s open countryside and ranching character provide a different experience from central Houston. Zube Park covers around 225 acres, while the local Oil Ranch offers a taste of traditional Texan rural life. A day in Houston can add museums, shopping, professional sport, parks and a famously varied restaurant scene to the trip.
We see Hockley working best as a quieter base within a wider Houston golf itinerary, particularly when access to Houston Oaks has already been confirmed. Spring and autumn generally provide more comfortable playing conditions than the hottest and most humid part of summer.
