About The Area
Hockley offers a peaceful base for a golf holiday in the Greater Houston area, combining rural Texas scenery with access to several high-quality courses. Situated northwest of central Houston, the community feels far removed from the city’s busiest districts while still allowing visitors to add Houston’s restaurants, sporting venues and attractions to their itinerary. George Bush Intercontinental Airport is approximately 42 miles, or 68 kilometres, from Hockley, so hiring a car is strongly recommended.
The standout local venue is Houston Oaks Country Club & Retreat. Its golf facilities include an 18-hole championship course designed by Chet Williams and the nine-hole Scrambler Course, which winds through centuries-old oak trees and beside several lakes. The main course offers six sets of tees, helping golfers of different abilities enjoy its strategic bunkering, water hazards and gently undulating landscape. Houston Oaks is a private members’ club, however, so visitor access must be arranged through a member, authorised event or eligible stay rather than assumed when planning a package.
For more straightforward visitor golf, BlackHorse Golf Club in nearby Cypress is a strong option. The club has two 18-hole courses, with its North Course offering public tee-time opportunities while the South Course is primarily reserved for members. Houston National Golf Club provides another championship layout in northwest Houston, designed by Von Hagge, Smelek and Baril.
Away from golf, Hockley’s open countryside and ranching character provide a different experience from central Houston. Zube Park covers around 225 acres, while the local Oil Ranch offers a taste of traditional Texan rural life. A day in Houston can add museums, shopping, professional sport, parks and a famously varied restaurant scene to the trip.
We see Hockley working best as a quieter base within a wider Houston golf itinerary, particularly when access to Houston Oaks has already been confirmed. Spring and autumn generally provide more comfortable playing conditions than the hottest and most humid part of summer.
