Porto Santo Golf
Pontinhas
Porto Santo Golf is one of the most distinctive golf experiences in the Madeira archipelago, combining a Seve Ballesteros design with dramatic Atlantic scenery and two very different styles of golf in a single round. Located on the small island of Porto Santo, the course stretches from the more sheltered southern landscape towards rugged basalt cliffs in the north, with views across the turquoise Atlantic appearing throughout.
Designed by Severiano Ballesteros and opened in 2004, the 18-hole, par-72 championship course measures 6,434 metres. The routing is particularly unusual, featuring an equal balance of six par 3s, six par 4s and six par 5s, giving the scorecard a completely different rhythm from most traditional layouts.
The southern section has more of an American-style character, with lakes, wider views and holes that reward both distance and accuracy. As the course heads north, the landscape changes dramatically. Fairways move towards the island's basalt cliffs, bringing the Atlantic much closer and making the wind an increasingly important part of club selection.
For us, this contrast is what makes Porto Santo Golf so memorable. One moment you are plotting your way around water hazards and bunkers, and the next you are playing beside rugged cliffs with views across both the north and south coasts of the island. Ballesteros also used strategically positioned bunkers throughout the layout, so finding the fairway does not necessarily mean the next shot will be straightforward.
The stretch from 13 to 15 is known as the course's 'Amen Corner', where accuracy becomes especially important against some of the most spectacular scenery on the property. The closing 18th is another classic Seve design: a par 5 where a large lake protects the green and a distinctive S-shaped bunker provides a final signature from the course's designer.
Alongside the championship layout is a nine-hole par-3 course, ideal for sharpening the short game or fitting in some extra golf. There is also a driving range, clubhouse, restaurant and bar, Pro Shop and changing facilities.
Porto Santo's long golden beach, relaxed atmosphere and year-round mild climate make the island an excellent destination when you want more from the trip than golf alone.

About The Area
I’m treating Pontinhas as the locality on Porto Santo, Madeira, which works really well for a quieter island golf holiday with beach time built in. For golfers who like Madeira but want something softer, sunnier and more laid-back than Funchal, Pontinhas gives you a peaceful base close to Porto Santo’s famous golden coastline.
For golf, the big draw is Porto Santo Golf Club. Designed by Seve Ballesteros, it opened in 2004 and includes an 18-hole course plus a 9-hole par-3 course, making it suitable for both serious golfers and mixed-ability groups. The main course is a proper island experience, with lakes, wide Atlantic views and dramatic cliffside holes, so it feels very different from a standard resort round.
Away from the course, Porto Santo is all about slowing down. The island is famous for its nine-kilometre sandy beach, with golden sand and warm waters, making it ideal for relaxed afternoons after golf. We would also recommend the Porto Santo Promenade, Portela Viewpoint, Calheta Beach for sunset, and a wander around Vila Baleira for food, drinks and local island atmosphere.
Our tip: choose Pontinhas if your group wants a Madeira golf break that feels calm, scenic and easy, with great golf, beach days and proper island charm.
