Palheiro Golf
Madeira
Palheiro Golf offers one of Madeira’s most spectacular rounds, combining championship golf with sweeping views across Funchal, the Atlantic Ocean and the island’s mountainous interior. Set within the historic Palheiro Nature Estate, the course occupies an elevated hillside position almost 500 metres above sea level, creating a peaceful and wonderfully scenic setting for a Madeira golf holiday.
Designed by Cabell B. Robinson, this 18-hole, par-72 course extends for approximately 6,000 metres. The layout winds through maritime pine trees, mature woodland and colourful subtropical vegetation, giving many holes their own distinctive character. Frequent changes in elevation, undulating fairways and strategically placed bunkers mean golfers must judge distances carefully and think about where they leave the ball.
Accuracy is often more valuable than power at Palheiro. Sloping lies and raised greens can make approach shots particularly demanding, while the island’s changing breeze adds another layer of strategy. The course can be enjoyed by a broad range of handicaps, although experienced golfers will appreciate the importance of course management and positioning. Due to the hillside terrain, a buggy is a sensible choice for many visiting players.
After the round, golfers can relax at the Vista Balancal Restaurant beneath the 18th green, enjoying Portuguese and Madeiran food alongside panoramic views of Funchal Bay. The wider estate is also home to the famous Palheiro Gardens, while the centre of Funchal is only a short drive away.
Away from golf, visitors can explore Funchal’s Old Town, sample Madeira wine, browse the Mercado dos Lavradores or take the cable car towards Monte. The island is also renowned for its levada walks, dramatic viewpoints, whale-watching trips and volcanic scenery. Palheiro Golf is an excellent choice for golfers looking for memorable views, a strategic challenge and plenty to experience beyond the course.
